Do some research first. It'll help you with your decision on a camera.

But i'll get you started.
MiniDV - records on tapes
DVD - records on DVDs
HDD - Records on hard disk drives

Theres also hyprids out there...like DVD&HDD and SD cards.
Just google and you'll find some info.

don't even bother with dvd cams... they're a joke. Check out the panasonic GS-500 if you're ok with a standard def cam, if you want a good little HD cam, go for the canon HV20.

minidv has the best quality although less and less camcorders continue with it.

That kind of is weird right?
MiniDV is the cheapest out there...yet it has the best quality?

Oh yea just wondering...but are HD cameras better than MiniDV quality? I'm just wondering since I haven't tested both out yet.

you sound like your getting confused..do you mean HD as in High Definition or HD as in Hard drive.

High Definition (HD) is better than just standard

Hard Drive (HDD) has worse quality than MiniDV

you were getting the things confused...HD and Standard are what it looks like..and HDD and MiniDV is what your recording on to

What about a HD HDD camcorder? Razz
Do they have better quality?

nope..recording onto MiniDV is better quality..it's costs more to get the tapes and whatever..but it's worth it in the end..

I think you guys are getting a little confused. Mini dv is just a recording medium, same with hdd cams. Bitrates, camera chip size, sensor quality, optics, etc determine image quality. Quality varies camera to camera, it's just not as simple as Mini dv looks better than hdd footage. There are actually some pretty decent hard drives cams out there right now.

tape is easier to handle right now though, so since you don't have much experience with cameras and stuff, just stick to the panasonic gs-500. It's a proven cam and it produces a good image.

yea i got the GZ-HD3
Its a great camera but it saves in a very weird format that people have had trouble with. I'm still looking for a way to convert it.
