ye i have had the shape done for a couple days... i have watered it into almost mud then let it dry for a day in 30+ weather... and it is still not rock hard.... every time i step on it, it moves... and im really having problems with the sides of the dirt jumps... they keep breaking and not staying
I hate when dirtjumps just wont harden. I have had alot of experience with building djs and I have found that they wont harden simply because of the dirt they are made out of. Very dark dirt tends to not work well because it is fluffy and wont pack. I suggest you find some more dense dirt (it should be lighter color and have no roots or sticks) and coat your jump with it. I made a shell of the good dirt over the bad, dark dirt on my jump and it is still hard packed. Give that a try and remember to keep sprinkling with water and packing

not true.
if you know what you're doing you can make good trails with any dirt.

Well i take it you dont live in northeastern US do you. Trust me dude i know exactly what im doing when it comes to building jumps. Im just explaining to the kid how he needs to choose dense dirt that doesnt have any roots or crap in it to build them. If there is crap in the dirt the jumps will tend to fall apart in layers and get squishy after like 2 weeks.

no I don't but I managed to make perfect trails under a bridge where it hasnt rained for about 10 years.
and ofcourse its better to use quality dirt but what if the kid lives in an area with just shitty dirt?
i take hay and put it all over the trail, after riding this for a while, it turns the jumps to rock because they become dry. I have also taken stone dust and put it all over the lips and track. Water works awesome too. You can also use some kitty litter to dry the mout really well.
i make a mud paste(dirt + water and mix to right consistancy) in the wheel barrow and then shovel that on,and shape it to my liking. then leave it to dry depending on temperture and how much or thick you you put on it can take 3days to 1 week for it to do so. after the mud has set (and it would have cracks in it now) sweep the jump down, gather the dust, wet the jump down, shovel dust into cracks and compact(this may need to done a few times. The jump is now ready to ride.
please note that you should always water and pack the jumps (with the dust) before every session(ie. every weekend you are there), and every 4-6 months they may require stripping the old mud of the face or shaving it with a spade and then a re-coating of new mud again
what i do to compact it realy well is i put a peace of soggy ply wood over the top of pre hardend dirt(hitting it with a flat head shuvle) and then jump off of it land on it, drive 1 wheel of a car over it just anything to put weight on it evenly and this will help it be even and help the egdes stay flat, and it will make it nice and compact, and this has helped me speed up the hardening prosses, and then sprinkle with watter and fill cracks every 3-5 days and thats all i know of now, if u have a night at your local bike park were you build up new jumps and burms and such, go to that and watch and help them

dont drive a car directly on the dirt, my buddy did that to my jumps and we couldnt even break up the dirt with a bobcat,
lol what did u use and SUV? i ment like a little car like a jeep or a civic, we could brake ours up with a shuvle
