Good luck finding Saints for under 250. That's what I hate about these forums. Most of the kids asking the questions don't have the money for the XTR brakes, the Fox suspension, or the Transition Bottlerocket.

Ranting aside, it depends on your current BB. There are two main types of MTB BBs, the ISIS type and the X-type.

An ISIS splined BB looks like this:

An X-Type BB looks like this:

Different tools remove them and different cranks match up with them. Most cranks you buy these days come with the BB though. Make sure to ask about that when purchasing.

Edit: f*ck the images aren't working. Just copy and paste the links into your browser.

Got it. but if the bb matches the cranks do you still have to take the old one out and replace it?

Sorry I didn't check your profile for your age before I commented. Rolleyes And I wouldn't know if you had a full time job- I mean face it, the majority of the kids asking about cranks, bikes, forks, or whatever either don't have the money for what they plan on purchasing or "will in a couple months". Right? You did say your budget was 250 or under.

Thats the problem I'm faced with right now. I think if you get a new BB with a new set of cranks, it is a good idea to swap out the old one for the new one. However, I would think that as long as the cranks you bought are meant for the same type of BB you currently have, then you should be fine just putting the cranks on.

no biggie. Ya that is my budget only because it makes me sick forkin over stacks of money. But if its a good crankset and worth every penny then im sure i can deal with it.

I guess the question would be then are the isis and x-type a standard size or do they vary slightly from one to the next. cause if you have a new bike but bad cranks the bb should still be in good shape couldn't you just swap the arms?

That's very true, I'm basically in the same position as you then. Going into the shop today I think to ask about the new cranks as I just bent the right arm on my Gravitys. I was looking at Saints and the new ones look sick, but I'd rather save a little and buy something on sale or really anything cheaper. I don't need a top of the line set right now.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but I don't think they vary at all, or they shouldn't. As long as the arms are the same type as the old ones, I think you should be fine, I don't see why not.

Do you want to stick with a mtb crankset or go with a bmx setup. Also what is your budget?

Hmm Im not to sure. im leaning more on mtb. budget is about 250 or less

Have a look into these cranksets.

Shimano Hone - $126usd - 911g - cheap and light

RaceFace Evolve DH $210usd - 1280g - Strong and decently priced.

2009 Shimano Saint - $227usd - i couldn't find weight - good looking and super stiff. but not available until around august Frown

If you want something really light I know you can get shimano xt's for around $200 shipped off ebay. Here are some other Online Stores you can check out

Or if your are interested I could sell you my 07 evolve dh's and drop them off.
