pros:
K10D is fully weather sealed
Shake Reduction in the body
Compatible with FAR more lenses then the D40/X
Optional grip

Cons:
Larger physical size compared to the D40/X
Nikon has a nicer flash system

o but it doesnt come with a lens.... and i will barely have enough money for D40x probably.

Just got a NIKKOR fisheye ( AF DX 10.5mm f/2.8G ED) and love it. works amazingly with my D70's and lets be honest... fisheye makes everything look cool. the lense is real light and the 180 degree angle of view is immaculate! not sure what they run for in canada but they are 600 in hong kong, and deffinately something to look into for your Nikon.

The 10.5mm F2.8 fish eye from Nikon is great fun.

Im having more trouble then I thought deciding between the k10d and the D80, the d80 comes in a bit cheaper, and has pretty much the same set up I think one more lens but no filters and no fish eye. Eek

all nikon lenses from all years are inter changable with every nikon body, thats the beauty of nikon,i'd go with the d80 if I were you. so you could get the same fisheye that I have and run it , the only camera that it doesnt work with is the d40, because of one of the settings

Pentax is the only one to make a Fish eye zoom: 10-17mm F3.5-4

That isn't true; the Nikon D80 will only meter on modern lenses that have a CPU in them. So if you wanted to run some older manual focus nikkors then you are of luck, you will need to go to a D1, D2, D3, D100, D200, or D300 if you are wanting to have metering with older lenses. The Pentax K10D/100D will meter with all lenses going back to 1959 and will give you full metering

I know you are a much better photographer then me but you're statement is incorrect, I have a few manual lenses (one thats over 20 years old) that came on my dads first nikon slr. these lenses work fine on both my d70 and his d80, you just need to know how to set the balances, etc on the lense. none of the digital displays work with them, or the built in flash, but you can still run them and get great photos. tripod or a steady hand, and knowledge of what certain settings do is all you need

My mistake; after doing a bit of research here is what I have come up with.

[Quoten]

The D100, D80, D70, D70s or D50 have a standard "F" type Nikon lens mount, the same lens mount Nikon has used in practically every SLR we have ever made. Best performance and functionality will be achieved when "D" or "G" type CPU lenses ("G" lenses have no aperture ring and are marked as "G".) are used, but many other Nikon lenses and accessories can be used.[/Quoten]

The following lenses can NOT be used with the D100, D80, D70, D70s or D50:

* IX Nikkor CPU Lenses
* TC-16AS AF Teleconverter
* Non-Ai Lenses
* Lenses which require AU-1 Focusing unit
* Fisheye - 6mm f/5.6, 8mm f/8, OP 10mm f/5.6
* 21 mm f/4 (old type)
* K1 and K2 rings, PK-1 and PK-11 auto extension rings, BR-2 and BR-4 auto rings
* ED 180-600 mm f/8 (serial numbers 174041-174180)
* ED 360-1200 mm f/11 (serial numbers 174031-174127)
* 280-600 mm f/9.5 (serial numbers 280001-300490)
* Lenses for the F3AF (80mm f/2.8, 200mm f/3.5, TC-16S Teleconverter
* PC 28 mm f/4 (serial numbers before 180900)
* PC 35 mm f/2.8 (serial numbers 851001-906200)
* PC 35 mm f/3.5 (old type)
* 1000 mm f/6.3 Reflex (old type)
* 1000 mm f/11 Reflex (142361-143000)

Hope this helps all of Nikon users out there!

28-80mm wont give you a wide enough angle of view, I would look at a kit that offers a 18-55mm lens. Where abouts are you looking at getting a camera?

O+

Canon digital xti, body was about $850 but new lense was $1500 (over 2 grand regular) but i got it off ebay for less money. Just need an external flash now and a mono pod or tri pod

with my budget the ebay stores seem like my best bet, Im looking at new un opened kits. The Pentax appeals to me alot because I can get a old lens for cheap if i buy it, with the Nikon it will be alot harder to find glass, I know im falling for kits again which is a pain in the ass, and also due to the AL. case with the pentax I assume shipping will jump up a fair bit.
BTW the pentax has the 18-55mm
