Just like the title says. Who would be up for a new bike shop in Winnipeg. Gord's has closed. I have 90% of the funding, but to get the last small loan, I need proof people would buy from a new store.
My business plan is for a niche market of core freeride, dj, park street, shore riders. Brands on Board are Transition, Commencal (tentative), Santa Cruz, Brodie. No hybrid, road, cruizer crap, only solid bikes that can take a beating, from good companies with good, growing reputations.
Winter gear includes snowboards and accessories from Rome, Academy and Burton, bindings from tech 9 Raidan and Burton, and outerwear.
Let me know of the interest, and help me make this happen. Tentative name is Legion Board and Bike.
I'm sure you've already thought of this, but make sure you ask yourself why Gord's closed; I'm not familiar with the Winnipeg scene but I know that here in Thunder Bay, not too far away, you really need a mix of styles to make a go of it. Even with our "mountains" we still have a lot of freeride bikes sitting in the shop at this time of year, so limiting yourself to only nice FR and street bikes (which are obviously the most fun of the bunch) might be hard. You actually make most of your money on the $300-800 bikes that people use for commuting, light trail riding, young high school racers, and basically just to have a bike to enjoy. Unfortunately for most shops, it's quantity of bikes over the quality of them (to a point); selling all those lower end "boring" units allows you to sell some of the high-end stuff. That being said, Winnipeg is a lot bigger than TBay so your base will be larger, but there still isn't a HUGE progressive riding scene there, from everything I've seen of it. Just a few thoughts, obviously it'd be great if you can pull it off, it's most pinkbiker's dream to be able to own a shop, so BEST OF LUCK to you!
Thanks for the reply man. I am a former employee of gords (long ago), and i have some inside info on the closing of gords. Long and short of it, not due to market info, due to expansion and lack of capital. I hear ya about the price ranges etc...it's true, but it's not the way I envision it, so I'll need to be careful on keeping costs low etc. thanks again!
Hey this is a great idea, im currently looking for a new DJ bike and i was unhappy with the brands that Winnipeg has to offer right now. Its mostly just KHS,Norco,Giant and Kona. (EDIT: While doing some reasearch i found that we can also get Santa Cruz bikes, but from bikes and beyond, way over priced!) While all three are good brands, there isnt alot of variety. I actually thought about opening or applying at a bike store when i graduate for highschool, and funny thing is, here is a thread about a new bike shop. As for prices i know there is ALOT of people my age, younger and older that are looking to get into dirtjumping. I live just outside Winnipeg in a town of about 4000 people and over 700 kids in my school alone. I know about 40 people that are just getting into dirtjumping and need parts and bikes. And im sure the numbers are more in winnipeg. Because im 15 i cant really help you on the mortgage but if this works out you guys will be the first place i come to! And if you need staff i might be able to help.
Good luck with this man! Im excited to see if it works out!
And if you need financing for people that buy the more expensive bikes, my mom runs a financing company and im sure would help you out if you need it.
Damn gord! But i thought about this too...if gords takes away from his idea, what winnipeg really needs is an indoor bike park. With a foam pit. Im sure it might cost more initially but if you made something like, $25 or something for flat admission or how ever long, or for the whole day or w/e. Then make a members package. 100 bucks for a member card which you then only have to pay 10 bucks to get in instead of the regular 25. Its how a local paintball field set it up and its a great system for the company and the players alike.
And I dunno how much money would be in it for you if it was strictly DJ/ other "alternative" types of cycling if you know what I mean. The majority of bikes most shops sell are lower end bikes, not everybody wants to spend 1.5K on a commuting bike.
Though, all the power to you if you go through with it.
Chances are you've already thought about all this but don't forget about the price of tools and your inventory when you first start out, both aren't exactly cheap.
Snowboards would be great too, I'm actually just looking for a new setup.

make a shop with an indoor park connected to it!!!! the indoor park could help pay for running the shop and if any riders need parts, your shop is right there connected

Yeah it wouldnt be hard to find a place with a small office infront and a shop or w/e in the back. Im not sure how much money WpgRider has so im not gonna go listing prices or anything but i think that would make a killer profit. There has to be thousands of people in the MB area that are looking for an indoor bike park and foam pit. As far as i know there isnt a single indoor park in all of manitoba.
It would be a really good idea.. a TOP will be my next bike that or a riot..maybe sell some blk mrkts?? anyways i think the indoor park would be a good idea..that would get you some customers
I would love to help you out with this, but i dont got the time, im super smart with business and that stuff i got 100% mark in futures and business at my school haha. But anyways give me a shout cause i wouldl love to make this happen.
