I am running a 36t sprocket on the front of my hardtrail bike and a 16t single speed on the back. I want a smaller sprocket on the front but I want the same amount of 'hardness on pedaling' If I go with a 32t sprocket on the front and a 12t sprocket one back will I have the same type of gearing?
no, it will be harder to pedal is you run a 32/12. a 2:1 gear ratio is pretty standard, whether you run a 32/16, 28/14, whatever. i would start with a 2:1, then tweak from there.
fyi though, i run a 28/14 and its the best all around. park, dj, no prob. street is kinda a bummer (gears are nice for street) but its no big deal.
Front sprocket divided by rear cog times the wheel sized should be close to 55. For example 25/12 x 26=54.1666 or This is typically how it is figured with the magic number being 55
If I go with a 32t sprocket on the front what tooth sprocket would I need on the back to keep the same amount of hardness as I do with a 36t on front and a 16t on back.
Ok Sorry if this is starting to annoy you guys I am only 14. I am useless with ratio's All I need to find out is if I go from a 36t sprocket to a 34t sprocket on the front do I go from a 16t on the back to a 14t?
So if I go with a 34t on front do I go to a 14t on the back. I AM RUNNING 26" WHEELS
ok so you are currently at 36/16 well that is a 2.25 ratio. 34/16 is 2.125. 34/14 is 2.43. So Basically what this means is you will not get your same speed with a 34 tooth. There is just no back cog that gives you the same speed. Well unless you can get ahold of a 15 tooth for the back then it is the same. So decide what you would like to sacrifice more. You can keep the 16 tooth on the back you will be a little slower. Or you can swap to the 14 tooth and you will be a little faster. Choose which one you want.
that would be probably the closest thing you can get to 36/16. it will probably feel almost the same
i suggest something light though, like 30/15 which is what i'm riding, or 30/14 which is what i would rather ride lol. but like on 30 15 i am able to clear basically any dj.
