Anyone play with shock length/or geometry on a Session 7 or 77. I have an 05 Session 77 170mm x 170mm. I put an 07 Fox 40 on the front and an 09 DHX 5.0,8.75 X 2.75 on the rear. The 40 is set at 190mm/7.5 inches. By adding the .25 inch eye to eye and stroke I got just over .5 inch (17mm)of travel at the rear. So I ended up at 190mm front and 187mm at the rear (7.5 x 7.3in). The bike has adjustable rear drop outs. They are adjustable by 25.4mm (1in). I fork is .75in longer and the rear shock is . 25 longer. The way I see it I am still with in 1 inch of the rear drop out adjustment. The bottom bracket ended up at 14.5 inches high. This is with the drop outs raised up in the highest position ( dropping the back). Trek website shows the BB height at 14.5. I am guessing this is with the drop outs adjusted in the lower positions (raising the back). So I went from a 6.75 inch travel bike to a 7.5 in travel bike. Haven't had a chance to take it down a trail yet. I do have a pretty good rock garden were I do all my testing and the bike feels great. Frame is an 05 so warranty is gone. I am also the second owner. I am aware I am messing with stock geometry but feel I am within spec of the adjustable drop outs the factory has built into the bike. The bike is just not as adjustable as it was. I got a great deal on the fork and the shock. was planning on upgrading to a Demo frame but couldn't find one in the right size at the right price. Maybe next year. Anyway, I really like the way the bike feels. Can't wait to take it down a trail. I'll get some pix soon.
Well I have it completed. Just need to take it out on the trail. I did have to make a slight modification. But that was mostly due to the factory welding. The ISCG mount was welded on crooked. This allowed the lower part of the swing arm to just touch the mount. It was touching with the stock length shock (8.5 x 2.5) as well. I filed it down a bit and this allowed the complete movement of the swing arm.
Head tube ended up at 66.o deg. Stock head tube angle 66.5 deg Seat tube ended up at 71.0 deg. Stock seat tube angle 72.0 deg. Bottom bracket height ended up at 14.5in.
I may try raising the fork to 8 in and see if that brings my angles in a little closer. If it raises the BB height to much I will drop it back down. Here are a few pix.
Was thinking of doing the same thing with my session as i've just put some 203mm Travis's on. What sort of clearance did you have between top of shock/linkage and top tube? I'm running a small 15.5in frame and am just a bit worried that a longer shock wouldnt fit!
Dont want to spend a wedge on a new shock and find out it wont fit!
how did you get that rear shock to fit, does the swing arm have a little extra play to it? and i was thinking about going to that set up too does it ride nice?/nice looking bike
It fit right on, it was a medium though. Not sure if it will work on a small or not. I liked the way it rode. I just happened to get a different frame for cheap and swicthed.
Just wanting to bring this thread back to life, just purchases medium size frame and wanted to play with upgrading fork and rear shock.
I have a medium 2006 Session77 and i've just fitted a Fox 40. I'm using the stock rear shock (Manitou 4 way swinger) When i bought the bike it had a Marzocchi 170mm triple clamp fork fitted.
I've only got out on it once since fitting the Fox fork, but i really like how it rides with the 40. The head angle is obviously slacker with the 203mm Fox fork than with the 170mm Marzocchi. Theres some pictures of it on my profile.
The rear dropout is set on the highest pair of holes (low and slack setting.) I'd be interested to know if anybody has experimented with a different rear shock.
Hey guys, I have also customized a Session 7 to the extremes. As for fitting a 2.75" stroke shock in place of the 2.5" stroke shock on a 15" frame, it can be done but you need to get a custom eye to eye so that it doesn't just push the plates up and raise the BB. I modified a 5th element 2.75" to fit. The thing is with the stock shock the swing arm under max compression allows 1" of spce between tyre and seat tube, with my mod I ended up with around 10mm using a rough measurement I think I increased the rear travel by around 20mm. if you get a 2.75" with a longer eye to eye all you are doing is jacking up the bike extending the swingarm to the max. I have used various shocks and forks, infact i'm fitting one with a angle set soon fo my buddy. Here it was with boxxers and a 2.75" back in the day:
And here it is with Fox 40's and a DHX:
To be honest, the extra travel was not noticeable, I prefer the tuned 2.5" DHX. There is a option of making a mount that will fit on the downtube shock mount to accomodate a longer shock, however you will also need to make coustom dropouts to set axle at 17.5" rather than the 17" that it sits at.

Hi mate, thanks for your post, sounds like you know a lot more about it than me for sure. Am i right in thinking the stock Manitou 4 way swinger on my 17.5" frame will be 2.5" stroke, so a 2.5" DHX would be directly interchangeable? Do you think this is a good upgrade? Cheers Nathan

Hey Nathan, it will be a 2.5" on all sizes. If you like your DH I would recomend a upgrade on the 4way, don't get me wrong the 4 way is a great shock, maybe a tune so that you can have it ramp up a little more in the end stroke than what is available in the volume adj. The DHX has transformed the Session 7 with tracking on the small stuff, to be honest the best thing about the S7 is that you can fit a Angle set and slacken it off, this transforms the ride and inspires confidence with speed. I would invest in a Cane Creek Angle set and getting the Swinger custom tuned..
