Is there any way i can break my chain without using a chain breaker? I need to get it off to paint my frame. Thanks,
Going back,,,,yeeeeeeeeeeears ago, When I was a nipper, ( black and white TV !! days )
The tools, Hammer Pliers ( or very small socket ) thin nail
Put the chain over the socket, Hit the nail with hammer. The pin should pass through the open hole. The pliers usually has a part where the wire cutters are, the reverse is a concave part put the chain over that - again hit with nail and hammer.
Used to use the reverse order to put it back on. !
The above mentioned will work but if you want to re-use the chain, be careful NOT to bend the links while knocking out the pin! You can more than likely pick up a chainbreaker at a place like Target, WalMart, Kmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc. for around $5? I'm not sure about the stores in Canada but the stores I mentioned are all around here in the states? Good Luck!
cut out a piece of the frame then take the chain off then when dnoe painting weld it back with the chain in there then give it a quick touch up. But on a serious note...go buy a chainbreaker for 4 bucks at canadian tire.
now i highly dont recommend ever buying bike tools from canadian tire but they do sell a chain breaker for like 4 dollars. please just buy a chain breaker, im big on the right tool for the job. it's not the best chain breaker ever but it does do the job!
if you use a grinder you can grind down a pin till its flush with the link, which removes the fatter "rivet" part of the pin. without the fat outer part, the pin will slide out easily, seperating the chain. now you can replace the missing link with a sram magic link and have easy break apart in the future.
