If don't mine buying used you can probably find some decent bikes for $2500. From your post I'd suggest something with around 8" of travel. I'd take a look in the buy/sell for bikes like a; Specialized Demo 8, Giant Glory, Norco A-line.

im not sure but i know you can get some very nice older wilsons that can be used for both big freeride an DH. i have an 2004 wilson and its great. the ollie seems good, it was meant more as a freeride bike, you can look on their website: www.devinci.ca.

Giant Reign X1...

You probably won't find a better bike than that for less than $2500... and yes, you probably can get it for that cheap if you bargain with your bike shop... they retail for like $2750...

jamis aren't very good bikes... i've seen MANY diablo's with severe frame/linkage issues...

Cannondale is the worst idea ever... for XC, MAYBE, but i would never ride a bike whose designers INSIST on grinding welds down for whatever stupid reason (cosmetics? weight reduction?) in either case, it severely weakens the weld

...ergo, there's a reason they call it crack-and-fail...

If you want to get into DH and Big Mountain Freeride you'll probably want something with more travel than Reign. I mean Reigns are pretty sweet bikes, but not really suited for kind of riding the OP is talking about.
