Tightening pedals.

Well i have the standard pedals that come on the kona hardtails at the minute. They are really loose at the minute and when i take the cap off, i cant reach the bolt inside it with anything to tighten them. What should i ask for at a DIY shop or bike shop so i can tighten them?
