Well its been awhile seince i posted here about wanting to get into trial's :\ aha well the begging of this year my hops started at curb hopping high and now at the end i got my hop to a foot.
now its been bugging me all year how do you trials riders get your hops so high? other then bike waight being a factor its puzzled me, im staring to belive it's your secret magical trials skills that let you do this
Lot's of practice. Try doing it up stairs. It's a hell of a lot easier if you have something you have to clear or you're going to run into it. Not to mention stairs work height and distance at the same time. Other than that just get that J motion down, make it one smooth move, and get your front wheel really high before jumping forward. I also have a slightly unorthodoxed technique. When I'm at the high point of my hop I kind of huck the bike out in front of me for extra oomph. It lands me in a manual a lot but I like it.
If you want to bunny hop higher make the bunny hop more risky... Jump over large spikes... or perhaps a bed of nails... it will force you to go bigger... Or just try hopping onto things that you think are to big... Really if you've got the technique down its just a matter of practicing and pushing yourself
no really its leg power and how you do it. i can husky my fully 2 feet and my street mtb (stp) onto a picknick table. But i also play rep hockey as a goalie which has forced me to train my legs to be stronger, making me able to jump higher... just practice and work those legs and as u get stronger u will jump higher
i've been hopping over foot high rails at my local skate, but what sketechs me out is thta befor i tryed to hop up a platform and when doin it i cased badily giving me a scare.
but is hopping really mind over matter or is it leg power?
Try hopping over something that isnt solid so you can just knock it over instead of bringing up solid in it. Gonna be hard to practice in Lab now with all the snow though eh?

It has nothing to do with leg strength. It's all in technique.

bike setup and weight definately makes a difference too... I can't bunnyhop my bmx worth a darn, my flow is meh-maybe a foot, take the loaner chase that I just got - bam that thing flies.
No offence but all of you sound like you dont know what your talking about. Except for the practice part. The bike dosent matter. If its lighter you can go a little hight but not much. All it comes down to is throwing your momentum. Basically you use your bike as a lever to get yourself into the air and then you throw your bike forward to bring the bike up. Concentrate on your body, not the bike. If your holding on to the bike it will follow. And timing is a big key too depending on how fast your going. If your doing a high speed one you might have to start your hop 10ft before your object.

thats why theres gerages mark :p also snowbanks ect aha
How big of a garage do you have? I use to practice trials stuff on the snowbanks by the Wabush library. Not recommended though, Ice and rubber tires dont mix.

bigenough to have 3 ski doo's 2 snowblowers, shelfs and a truck, bigger then wabush gerages, big enough to get get a lil bitta speed and hop

If it is height you are looking for the key is not speed or weight, but technique. You should start at a walking pace towards an ledge. Platforms and ledges are easier to jump onto rather than trying to clear something entirely.
Start off by pulling up just the front end (like a manual)about 2 feet before the object. Make sure you can get your front tire high enough to clear the object. Just as your front tire is clearing the edge throw your handlebars forward while pulling up on the pedals and pushing forward. You want to try and get the rear tire to land just past the edge.
If you are moving slowly and your rear tire doesn't make it you'll still be okay. As long as you have a bashguard (which you should) you might land on that onto the edge. You might go through a couple tubes while first getting your speed down (pinchflat) but, once you get the movement of throwing the bike forward while centering your weight over the back tire, soon you'll be trying bigger and bigger things.
The next step is throwing in the pedal kick before the pick up, but for now just work on the big ups. You should be able to get up to around 3+ feet. If your really curious on learning trials from nothing, try getting Ryan Leech's "The Art of Trials". Lots of show and tell.
