The monsters are older and wont last as long obviously.
You could wait until the monsters break,I have heard 888s are very reliable.

lol monsters are most likely the strongest fork ever and wont ever break.

only problem i see is getting spares, however i have heard that other than the weight the monsters are the best forks ever.

Yep i bought the bike about a week or so ago and it came with the monsters. Ive changed loads of parts on it but didnt know what to do about the forks so i bought a set of 888s they arrived today. im off to wharncliffe on Sat to test them and the new bike out but ive got the 888s to give them ago as well. ill just sell on the set im not as impressed with but could do with a hand deciding. trying to find out what peoples long term views on the forks are before i commit to selling either set on

what year are the 888,the best year 888 was 06-07 as the 08 888 had some bugbears.

but like you said best thing to do is ride both and decide from there, however you could always get the 888 properly tuned http://www.tftunedshox.com/ and get them to feel as good as the monster without the weight penalty.
