Maybe you should learn the basics with a more simple camera before you go onto D-SLR's. you don't know much.

I also have a D40, stock 18-55 lens, Sunpak auto 144 D flash, just bought a Vivitar 285HV flash, and I ghetto rigged up a wired flash trigger. it went from Unsecure image, only https images allowed: http://jamiewillmott.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/trigger_top_600x400.jpg

and I must say, the Vivi flash is huge. Did not expect that.

It's definitely a monster, but just wait till you see studio lights and such.
My 285HV is a workhorse, but is about to kick the bucket.
