I have a rock shox Totem which I would like to strip the paint of the lower, though being Magnesium instead of Aluminum is there any special prep I would need to go through with. I was planning of stripping the paint of, then keeping them raw with a clear coat finish if possible, or would it be in my best interest to paint them instead.

just don't use a wire wheel or to strip them or it the magnesium will pit really bad.

I don't think there pure magnesium,more of an aluminum magnesium mix so you should be ok.

im just asking if it's possible. it'll save me like 200 for new lowers. im saving up for an 831 n im jus makin a temp fork. Like the next guy said, just don't use a wire brush or drill bit n i thin k u should be fine

If you wanna paint them do not remove all the paint off, just use 3M Scotch-Brite and scuff the lowers with it. And if you want to remove the paint/powder coating from the lowers just find in your area some sand-blasting shop. But before you do painting or sand blasting take the fork a part, remove all the parts from it.. thats how i did it Smile

i wouldn't sandblast magnesium. but if you choose to, be very careful no sand gets in the fork.

i wouldn't sandblast magnesium. but if you choose to, be very careful no sand gets in the fork.

he did say to take the fork apart, remove all parts.....

anyways just use some automotive paint stripper type stuff like xyeline. dont go sandblasting and whatever.

I just painted my domain. Strip the paint with aircraft stripper from autozone (Buy a box of nitrile gloves too, and put on a few layers of them!!!)

and get the lil nooks and crannies cleaned with a small stainless steel wire brush on a dremel. then wet sand the lowers with 800 grit and clean it like crazy.

QUICKLY!!!!!!! apply a coat of primer!!!!!! do a few coats.

then hit it with a few coats of color

wait for it to dry for a few days, then apply decals and clearcoat. allow to dry for 2 weeks before you apply wax (wax is a good thing to do, and use real carnuba wax, not turtle wax junk)

Remove the lowers before you do this! i'd reccomend doing seals afterwards.

sand blasting will kill the fork they have to be beed blasted.

I talked to guy at a bike shop and he explained it pretty how you did, but I never got why you have to apply is SO QUICKLY...does the Magnesium like rot or something if I wait?

Ahh alright, so in a sense it will rot away and not hold its original strength?

Are there any "How To Dissemble a Totem Coil" guides with photos that some one can direct me towards, since all I really have is How To Tune One.

Magnesium won't rot away it's strength, it's just that the paint doesn't stick to the oxide too well.
