FAR Bike Park Update #4: The Waiting Room
May 22, 2012

No one can’t say for certain when the symptoms first started: the racing heart, the sweaty hands, trouble concentrating. About mid-April I was waking up in the the night with twitching fingers and restless legs. Spring in Fernie came fast, with many of our local trails drying out well before May Long Weekend. But no amount of cross country or local low elevation shuttle laps has satisfied this sickness. The only certain cure is a dose of vitamin DH at Fernie Alpine Resort, and your patient is prepped and ready for sugary, Doctor.

This is it. The Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew are scrubbing in for Summer 2012 operations. This is the week we crack the chest to find out what kind of damage was done over winter, stop the bleeding and transition towards recovery. Our list is long; in addition to general inspection and maintenance we need to adjust traffic flow on the lower mountain to accommodate the aerials park. This means some relocation of Top Gun, Power Carve and the Canada Cup DH. We want our berms to be bigger, our single track to be smoother, and our woodwork to be worthy of your tires. For those who ride on the darker side of the forest, we have already completed a new section of TNT below the White Pass Load and are finishing up on some new features and repairs on Phat Larry’s. In continuing efforts to expand our beginner trail network, our crew has built a new upper section of Big Rig accessible from the Elk Unload, and wrapped up construction of some new low angle singletrack riding off of Boom and Cedar Trails which give a nice option to those looking for more challenge than wide road or machined trails. Time and time again last fall, we heard that these greenies were FAR’s best kept secret for loamy, flowy, bermy riding at any speed or ability level.

If you have not heard about some of the other exciting changes at Fernie Alpine Resort: the Bike Park opens for preview weekend on June 23rd and 24th; we will now be open 7 days a week during normal operations, staff are currently installing a new aerials park and zipline, AND you can now by a dual mountain (Fernie and Kicking Horse) seasons pass for $229.00! The Kelsey’s Thursday Night Race series continues with the first event on July 5th. Both the Transrockies and the Furious 3 events are making a stop at Fernie Alpine Resort this summer. The Powerade Gravity Bike Festival is back, look for details on our website but plan to be here July 14-15th. If you have the guts, glutes, and gusto you can have the glory – the Lost Boys Lungbuster is back on August 18th as racers climb 2100 vertical feet from the base to the top of Lost Boys Pass.

For those of you also experiencing symptoms; the Doctor is in. Relax, lay back and slowly count down from 31…30….29…..28…..

Sincerely,

Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew
