Gibsons, BC –
Norco Performance Bikes is proud to once again support Doug Detwiller and his
Sprockids “Coastriders” Program. Norco Factory Team riders and Norco staff recently spent the weekend in Gibsons to help Sprockids update and tweak the Sprockids Mountain bike, stunt and dirt jump park for this generation’s new school of rider.
Norco Factory Team Rider, Hugo Donais, digs in
On the first day of the two day event, Norco pro riders, Hugo Donais, Jay Hoots and Kyle Guay were joined by staff riders, Mag Grant, Neil Phipps, Dave Devlin, Logan Johns, Dave Hill, Steve Pukesh, John McGaire, Marc Arellano, Damian Gribble, Pete SS and his son Darren, and picked up shovels and rakes to help approximately 90 dedicated community members build a new jump 6-pack, practice drop zone and trials section within the Sprockids Mountain bike park.
Hoots Jay doing what he does best: showing by example
“Last year was so rad” says Jay Hoots, “but this year’s turnout is truly inspiring, especially when you realize there are 3 generations here working side by side for something so constructive.”
The overwhelming turnout meant the work got done a lot faster than anticipated, which left lots of time in the afternoon for the kids and the Norco riders to test out the new kickers, drops, teeters and skinnies.
“This community is just great,” states Detwiller, Program Director, “we didn’t expect such a big group. Once again the Norco crew got right in there and used their expertise to build up exactly what we needed, and then spent a great afternoon coaching and working with the kids on jumping and riding skills.
Norco staff, Logan and Dave, slinging a little dirt
On day two, Sprockids Coastriders regrouped for a Norco “ride with the pros day.” For a second year in a row, young ripper Ian Moult, Jay Hoots and Norco staff lead groups of riders through a network of trails in the Roberts Creek area of the Sunshine Coast. Shaums March, a recent addition to the Norco team, and Kris Holm, the one-wheeled wonder, were also stoked to be there and to have a chance to give something back to the kids.

“Doug and this community” states Peter Stace-Smith, Norco PR/Marketing Manager, “are the perfect examples of how it should be. It’s great to be reminded of why we all got into biking. Each year I’m amazed that we can all walk away having learned something new.”

Summary of the weekend by Hoots Jay:Every single one of the Norco crew and team REPRESENTED. I have had the opportunity to be involved in a couple of other events where factory team riders came out, to hang out, and more often than not they end up talking amongst themselves or riding in a tight group. At this event Norco showed up and grooved as locals, such a chill event, always inspiring!
Most notable was the pure soul and energy of the riding community in Gibsons and area. Both youth and adult's alike seem to have such passion for their trails and bikes. Combine Doug's hard work and unwavering dedication to this mix and you may in fact have Cycling Utopia only a ferry ride away.
Thanks again for the awesome opportunity Hooty
