Evil Bikes and e13 Components

Evil Bikes, makers of the Evil Imperial and SRS™ Security Chainguide are pleased to announce e13 Components. Evil co-founder Dave Weagle said of the new product line, "During the last 2 years, we
have realized that media exposure is very difficult to get with a name using
the word Evil". It seems as though the mainstream cycling media, unlike Pinkbike, is reluctant to promote a company with such "Evil" roots. e13 Components will develop new components and Evil Bikes will license that technology from e13. Fear not evil doers, consumers will have a choice what name adorns their cycling goodies. Speaking of goodies, e13 Components and Evil Bikes are pleased to announce the release of their Dual Ring Security (DRS™) chainguide, a multi-ring chain retention system that has been developed over the last two years. The innovative design maintains the excellent chain retention capability of the single ring e13 and Evil Bikes Security chainguides, and in addition allows the use of a front derailleur and two chainrings, offering riders the ability to traverse any terrain without the worry of throwing a chain or skipping gears.

In addition to the nearly indestructible, over half-inch thick polycarbonate bashring, the heart of the DRS™ chainguide is the innovative Flip-Flop™ roller. The e13 Components/Evil Bikes DRS™, and Flip-Flop™ roller maintain constant chainring/chain engagement, regardless of adverse conditions, allowing the bike to be pedaled over any terrain without worry of dropping a chain. Additionally, it can be backpedaled in any gear combination, regardless of chainline. This is important to riders now more than ever before, as wide tires and suspension pivots force frame designers to compromise chainline for other design aspects. The DRS™ can transform a wide-chainline, chain-dropping bicycle into a smooth shifting machine. The Flip-Flop™ roller works so well in fact, that U.S. patents were filed for in the first months of 2001 to protect the design. In November 2001, more than six months after patent applications were filed, the details of the DRS™ chainguide design and Flip-Flop™ roller were officially unveiled to the

The Flip-Flop™ roller uses a patent-pending stepped design, which is functionally configured as two adjacent, different-diameter cylinders. The two diameters are designed to act as chain contact surfaces, with the larger diameter aligned under the granny ring, and a smaller diameter aligned under the middle ring (see pictures). Shifting the front derailleur causes the chain to jump up or down the step, depending on which chainring is in use. When back pedaling in the middle ring, the stepped design functionally acts as a chain-retaining flange, preventing the chain from dropping to the granny ring (a common problem with other 2-ring chainguides).

Evil Bikes Single and Dual Ring Security chainguides are slated for delivery on during the first week of May 2002, and can be purchased by retailers through BTI, or by contacting John Pentecost at Evil Bikes business headquarters at 207.846.3355.
