Long Term Follow Up - On-One Reetard Bar and Stem

May 28, 2002

Ever broken a handlebar or stem? If not, maybe you've bent one or more? If you're into drops, DH or like me just plain crash a lot, this is the bar/stem combo for you. In the six months I have been testing these bars, I have suffered no less than 2 broken ribs, a broken finger and countless bruises and strains. Just ask my Active Release Therapist! Thankfully, the folks at On-One had riders like me in mind when they designed their Gimp lineup.

The 2 piece stem is forged and then sees some minor machining to get it's final shape. Shot peening adds strength and black anodizing makes for a stealthy finish. The most beautiful part about these parts has to be their lack of beauty. No flash, fancy decals, logos or unnecessary machine work. With a suggested retail price of just $34.99 CAD and strength second to none, I don't see how you could go wrong with this setup. The stem's low stack height makes it great for those who suffer from a short steerer and the four bolt bar clamp should never come loose. Compared to the more expensive stems on the market, the only downside I can think of is the hex bolt heads have begun to rust. Cosmetic really, and those of you that care about such things could easily splurge for a set of stainless fasteners and still have enough left over for the bar.

As for the bar, it has handled my abuse, countless crashes, and shuttle-lovin' suffering nothing more than a few scratches. The 6061 bar's 27 inch width makes for easy steering action and it's 5.2mm thickness stands up to Radek sized stress at a suggested retail of just $46.99 CAD. It too is shot peened for strength and anodized in the same stealth black as it's matching stem.

Who should ride the Reetard?

Those of you who must have the lightest, prettiest, most CNC'd, detailed, relieved parts, need not apply. On-One looks to be the working man's hero making parts that work at an affordable price. They have a full line of parts including the Gimp and Reetard 3 piece cranks. If your shop doesn't stock On-One, in Canada, you can get the full product lineup online from www.Cycles-Simtra.com. Internationally, you can shop online directly with www.on-one.co.uk. Trust me (and Rod), you can't go wrong!
