PRESS RELEASE: Revy50

It was in Pemberton BC in 2019, and it was the last chapter of the Nimby Fifty. What a great event that was. If you love riding your bike and never had a chance to participate in that event I have to say (regrettably) that you've missed out on something special.

I thought the concept was really interesting. They combined a technical marathon XC mountain bike race, as they called it, with a timed descent of the famous Overnight Sensation on Mount Currie, which is anything but XC racing. Imagine threading the needle down gnarly, rocky, chunky or sometimes really long slabby sections where you're trying to make it down alive on your 25lbs, 100mm travel, 69 headtube angle, pinner XC bike. Not to mention that while enduro bro with his baggy shorts just annihilated that line in front of you, you in the meantime, dressed with your shop sponsored lycra uniform, visorless helmet, feeling naked on your bike--obviously without knee pads--are just trying to keep a steady pace for the overall time score.

That was me, 3 years ago, I was on my Rocky Mountain Element having the best time ever. I still recall being witnessed by dozens and dozens of spectators on top of Overnight Sensation, ready to commit to this classic rocky section, everyone making a lot of noise with anything possible, chainless chainsaws, handlebars hitting older bike frames, the screams and cheers were insane. It really is the best time ever! The energy in the air is palpable and that’s what you want as a racer in an event.

Driving back to Revelstoke after the race, I started thinking about the weekend I just took part in and how lucky I was to be part of the very last edition of the classic 2019 Nimby Fifty. “Now that I can’t take part in another Nimby Fifty ever, why not bring something similar to my hometown, call it the Revy 50 and make it actually 50 km?!” (The Nimby Fifty was 37 km, not entirely sure why it’s called fifty but I’ve heard through participants during the race that they called it the Fifty because it felt like 50 km, but that's only what I heard while racing it).

A few months later, I initiated the project without really knowing what I was getting myself into but really wanting to do this. Things slowly started to happen and then BAM, the world stopped due to COVID. Next year, same story, but I figured it wasn’t going to stay like that so I might as well get it going and make this project happen! Fast Forward 8 months later and here we are, 5 weeks away from Revy 50 first edition!

The experience so far has been great, everything is pretty much smooth sailing from here on and at this point we’re focusing on getting the word out about the race and promoting it the best we can to get people to sign on. The Revy 50 race will be a 50 km mass start starting in downtown Revelstoke, BC, on Mackenzie avenue making its way to the Mt. Macpherson trail network for 50km of single-track delight. Upon those relentless trails, there will be 4 timed descents throughout the course, some of them are flowy and others are steep and techy. Categories will be simple - mixed U19 open on a short course, solo women & men with age categories, and mixed teams of 2! Rewards will be cash and product prizes for each of the 5 categories for both overall time and cumulated timed descents.

The weekend will kick off with Revelstoke Bikefest, and we’re stoked to combine the Revy 50 with a number of other cool events so that there’s something for everyone. Kids, non-racers, supporters--they’ll all have fun experiencing the best of Revelstoke!

Friday, September 9th, there will be a fun bike skills showdown for kids followed by a BBQ. After that it’s the adults’ turn to show off their skills and good humour in their own Mega Bike Showdown. Saturday brings the opportunity to ride with Wade Simmons, go and watch the Revelstoke Women’s Enduro, do a ride sponsored by Skookum Revelstoke or just check out the industry expo.

Sunday the 11th will be the Revy 50 starting right downtown in Revelstoke. And for your roadie friends the Revelstoke Steamer also runs on Sunday. Riders test their legs against the longest paved climb in Canada, the 26km ascent of Mt. Revelstoke.

I'd be more happy if the Chinese restaurant close to that sign offered all you can eat buffet again like they used to before the pandemic.
