This has been a while coming, we’ve all been waiting patiently for Mark Huskisson’s latest instalment of the Downhill racer guide, so a few long weeks ago a few people were surprised to hear that the world premier of “Home” was being added to the bill for the cinematic showing of the collective’s third film “Seasons”.This turned out to be the latest offering from the affable Geordie and his cronies that we see behind the camera just about everywhere we have ridden these past few years, but not to worry, all you fame junkies that are dying to catch a glimpse of yourself on the now familiar Downhill racer guide wont be disappointed, because this is included on the DVD as a separate feature………..so what’s the point I hear you ask?

Well, the proofs in the eating, having been on a few journeys with the director and heavily involved in the scene myself for the last few years, I can relate, as I’m sure a lot of you guys out there can too. Home is about our small family, our friends, our world that we think is so big, so bold and so constantly under-rated and under-valued, in short, it’s a film that focuses solely on why we ride. Home is not a huck-fest, nor downhill movie or XC feature, what it does is encapsulate all aspects of riding through the eyes of a few key players from last year and the people that supported them through the ups and downs of the last 18months, at locations like Aberfoyle, Fort William, Champery, Vigo, Drumlanrig, Kinlochleven The 7 Stanes and many more.

Home has a real softness about it, a really warm feel that I haven’t seen on any other bike movie. All your staple personalities are there and included are the names and features you would expect from any release of this type, but they’re delivered in a wholly different manner, which is why I refrain from using the word “segment” or “section” because it just doesn’t feel like that, the flow of the film is it’s crowning glory, it’s an effortless watch that really involves you with the story and makes the running time totally inconsequential.

Shot in HD and also in 16mm the contrast between some pieces is startling, giving a definite impression of a change of mood or location.

Personally, I think Home is a brave move away from the standard fare on offer, no sponsorship constraints, no egos on display and no heirs and graces, featuring people, places and commentary that we all can relate to as riders or racers, giving it a real edge that none of us (even those of us in the know) saw coming.

Mark is focused on the quality of his work, this and the birth of his new son have contributed to the delay of this release, but in the end, if you know the man, you’ll never have doubted the quality or integrity of his next offering.

In closing, it was great to see this film on the big screen, there MUST have been a worry that this home-made low budget film was being pitched against another highly anticipated feature from the all conquering Collective, but at the end of a long night at the Glasgow film theatre it was Home that surprised everyone with its originality, cinematography and content.
