this is an alternative lacing pattern known as a "3 leading, 3 trailing" lace. It isn't any stronger than a conventional tangentially laced wheel, but it does have an interesting look. It uses the same spoke length as a 3 cross and works best with larger hub flanges. Small flanged hubs like this are difficult to lace this way because the spokes are interwoven and very close together.
