Great bike with a great build at a reasonable price. An excellent way to get into AM or upgrade your current bike. Just wish dealer support was a little stronger as it's hard to locate a dealer. Frames are built bullet proof, but also a little on the heavy side as a result.

I work for Jamis and I picked a XAM II as my all around trail bike / park bike. The XAM II is very versatile and great for long trail epics or a day at the bike park. Climbs very well, but not light like a uber light XC bike. That's ok though it rails everywhere else. The Hammerschmidt is sick! The shift is always there. Always! The rest of the spec is proven. If you have an opportunity to demo one of these you should. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

aside from the frame issues in 2008, the bike itself rides awesome. Descends like a fr bike, and with a dhx air, climbs like an am bike should. completely at home in the tech stuff too. Dont let the bad rap on the frame take away from how awesome the bike really is. if its a blue or chrome frame your good. If its a dark grey frame, get the updated chainstay, and your good. Or a bam chainstay will work if you have a 150mm rear wheel laying around.

For a more serious DH experience, I had this bike far a bit but found I don't live in the right place to use it properly. I have used on the DH slopes in Ontario and WOW! what a f#@$ed up ride.

Jamis Dakar XAM II (MSRP $4975) — From the beginning, the Dakar XAM earned a rep as an incredibly plush, efficient trail bike. This year, we reworked it from head tube to rear dropout, making it the best-handling/best-pedaling 6-inch travel all-mountain bike to ever set tread on dirt. We finessed and overhauled everything we could on XAM for no-excuses performance. The XAM’s mp3 rear suspension gets a new one-piece bell crank, new pivot hardware, new seatstays and dropouts for more stiffness at the back end, and a 2.63:1 shock leverage ratio that improves shock life and offers more progressive control. Up front there’s 20mm of stiff thru-axle strength to keep you firmly planted and pointed where you want to go no matter how aggressive the conditions.
