Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Park Update #7 - Bermin' Love

The best time of the day is before 11AM. After then, the sun transforms itself into a scorching orb ready to evaporate any ambition or energy. It is like working in an oven set to broil. Sweat-stained trucker hats, farmers tans, and colorful 80's shades abound. Riders enjoy early bike park laps before heading to one of Fernie Alpine Resort's shaded patios or for a late afternoon float down the river; thankful for the technology that created air conditioning and ice cubes. Welcome to August in the Kootenay Rockies.

Despite temperatures tickling 35C, our Bike Crew has been working away at a few awesome upgrades over the past two weeks. A lot of our focus has been on the hiking trail program including the installation of new interpretive signage and the addition of two new sections of hiking trails. So when you are looking to escape the heat, head up the Timber Chair to explore our alpine trails (it is still possible to a do a little summer boot skiing on Polar Peak) or stop in for a visit at our new Interpretive Center at the top of the Elk Chair.

In the cooler mornings, we have been able to cross a few other items off our to do list. Two major windstorms wreaked havoc in the forest, dropping trees that crushed wood features and deposited extensive blow down on most of our trails. With all your favorite rides now buffed out and wood features rebuilt, we look forward to the next time mother nature unleashes her furry to do it all over again! It has also been a major mission to remove a lot of the encroaching slash, stumps, and boulders poking onto, out of, or even remotely near the trails. This is obviously an ongoing mission so feel free to let our staff know if you have had a 'special connection' with a particular frustrating piece of nature and we will do our best to take care of it for you.

While the riding is generally pretty fast and loose around the mountain in this hot, dry weather, there are plenty of trail options, trail upgrades, and events to look forward to. If you are a gal that likes a little dirt in her lip gloss, there is a women's beginner and intermediate bike camp August 2, and an advanced camp on August 16th. Other events include The Five Peaks Trail running race on August 16th, our second kids Howl at the Moon Campout also on August 16th, and who could forget our locals favorite Kelsey's Thursday Night Race series each week (awesome costume optional). Last but not least, the Legendary Summer BC Cup finals are returning to Fernie again this year August 29 - Sept 1. With plenty more summer ahead of us, you can be sure to see more new stuff out there and an ongoing commitment to our trail maintenance program throughout the summer. Keep checking back with us for the latest Bike Crew updates and trail work photos on the Fernie Alpine Resort facebook page.

Thanks for all the trailside shout out's and popsicle drops this week Loam Rangers. We take your positive vibes and send them right back at you! Keep rockin' it till your wheels fall off.

Sincerely,
Your Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Crew
