A few tips on how to cork flip with Rocky Mountain Bikes rider Jarrett Moore. With this trick it is important that you have mastered the backflip before trying. I personally find that if I am going to be going up side down, this is the way I prefer. Adding a little cork allows me to see the landing longer, as well as suffer less sever consequences with over rotation. That is not to it also have its disadvantages. If you don't know how to straight flip, I would not try this trick out.
Technique- I role into the jump with slightly more speed than to straight air
- As I come into the lip, I start my jump normal, but instead of popping up and back like I would for a straight flip, I role
- Once I am almost off the lip, right at the end I pull into my rotation
- I drop my butt slightly to the side and I role into a flip
- Instead of maintaining my vision back like I would for a straight flip, I try and look forward
- Once I am about half way through the spin I snap my head back to finish the rotation and tuck in.
- I find my landing, adjust my hips for landing and place my wheels down
I equate it to trying to do a straight flip, but instead of looking up and over I maintain vision at the landing for the first half of the spin.
ProblemsLanding SidewaysI have problems with this when I roll too much, when I am trying to not lose too much distance on my spin. The way I fixed this was to not roll as hard, or by transferring more. Transfering more can be a good method to fix this, but is not always possible depending on the size of the landing you are working with.
Losing DistanceIf you are losing lots of distance on your spin, you are pulling too hard. Depending on the size of the jump I don't go much faster, if faster at all. Wait to pop and pull/roll into your spin until later in the jump. I drop and roll pretty well after I have left the lip.
TransferingIf this is happening you are popping and pulling away from the lip instead of rolling through it. Try and not jump away from the lip with your roll.
Speeding Up or Slowing Down RotationI can tell in the air how much faster or slower my spin needs to be, this will come as you get the feel for spinning. If I find I have not spun enough off the lip, I tuck and snap my head earlier in the rotation. If I am going to overrotate I pull in later through the rotation. Another way to achieve this is to tuck into a ball more to speed up your rotation. Alternatively, if you want to slow down your rotation, stretch out.
Last Couple PointersFinding the happy medium between getting a good roll and pop is crucial for this trick. The only way to find it is through trial and error. Also, the longer you can wait to pull into your spin the less distance you will loose and the easier it is to control the speed of the spin.
Be safe!
