Fresh from his podium at Crankworx Cairns, Anthony Messere was hungry to build on his success at Crankworx Rotorua.
The season finale was looking good on a newly-built Speed & Style course that featured two huge trickable jumps.
The weather, however, had different ideas. After a challenging week of torrential rain and heavy wind, the Clif Speed & Style event resulted in training, practice, qualifications and finals all rolled into one day.
Messere qualified in second place, giving in a favorable matchup in the first round of the bracket against Kiwi rider Connor Mahuika. All was looking good for the ‘comeback kid’. But in the quarter-finals, battling Peter Kaiser, disaster struck.
A pair of hard crashes in the first run meant that Anthony had to make up at least two seconds and reach deep into his bag of tricks to advance. Unfortunately, even with the crowd-pleasing lawn dart forward flip on the final booter, Messere was knocked out by Kaiser.
| Coming from just riding Slopestyle, the Speed & Style is quite a bit different. It was a nice change of pace - not having to worry about just tricks, but also the lines that you’re choosing, keeping your speed and trying to be fast through the course.—Anthony Messere |
Tomas Lemoine once again claimed top spot on the podium, with Peter Kaiser claiming the silver medal and Bas van Steenbergen scoring the bronze medal.
| Returning to Crankworx has been awesome! Connecting with friends, riding together, soaking up the atmosphere of Crankworx and watching the events has been wicked! Looking forward to 2023 already.—Anthony Messere |
2022 has been the year of the comeback for Messere. He has gone from strength to strength - starting in Whistler, podiuming in Cairns, and then qualifying in P2 in Rotorua. Messere is already hard at work preparing for an epic 2023 - we look forward to following his every trick along the way.
