Four young rippers, Malcolm, Anthony, Kaiden, and Nathan, got together to film this edit at Highlands Bike Park. We took some time to chat with them about the ins and outs of filming, setting goals, and getting sponsored.

MALCOLM | 7

bigquotes My dad can keep up with me, but not for long. When I get a bike with 24 inch wheels, I will definitely be faster than my dad.

Who taught you how to ride bikes?
I taught myself.

Does anyone else in your family ride bikes? Who? Can they keep up to you?
My dad. my mom, and my three year old sister all ride pedal bikes. My mom and sister can’t keep up with me going downhill. My dad can keep up with me, but not for long. When I get a bike with 24 inch wheels, I will definitely be faster than my dad.

Who are your heroes/favourite mountain bikers? Why?
Kaidan is my favorite mountain biker because he is really good at dirt jumps and downhill and he is my friend. Anthony is my other favorite rider because he is my friend and he can do a lot of stuff better than me.

What is your favourite trail? Why?
My favorite trail is Hellion at Highland because it has big jumps and technical spots also.

What is your most recent achievement?
I started riding the big line in lower Sherwood Forest at Highland

What do you do when you aren’t riding bikes?
That’s a good question. I sleep and go to the beach and go snowboarding.

What goals are you working on this summer? New tricks, going faster, bigger jumps?
I am working on the denture feature on New England Style at Highland.

Do you have any sponsors? If so, who are they? If not, who would you like to be sponsored by?
I am sponsored by my parents.

What was your favourite part about making the video?
Riding was my favorite part, waiting around was not very fun.

ANTHONY | 9

bigquotes I just learned to do no footers in the jump park!

Who taught you how to ride bikes?
My dad taught me how to ride when I was three years old. I started out on a glider bike that was made out of plastic tubing but I broke it trying to do jumps. I also started out doing the Kids Camps at Highland Mountain Bike Park and now I do Summer Ride. I can’t wait until I’m old enough to do Ayr Academy. Chad and Chris (coaches) have taught me to jump and do big drops.

Does anyone else in your family ride bikes? Who? Can they keep up to you?
My whole family rides bikes. My dad and I ride downhill but we also do a lot of cross country rides as a family. My mom and my big sister Anna mostly ride cross country but sometimes they ride downhill too. My dad can keep up with me when we ride downhill but I’ll be faster than him soon.

Who are your heroes/favourite mountain bikers? Why?
I really like Brandon Semenuk because he is super good at riding. I also like Cam McCaul because he’s funny and also very good. A long time ago I said hi to him at the Claymore Challenge.

What is your favourite trail? Why?
Highland Mountain Bike Park is my favorite place to ride and I have a lot of favorite trails. If I had to pick one it would be Cat’s Paw. I like it because it has lots of cool transfers you can find. It’s really fun to ride it and find new lines to ride.

What is your most recent achievement?
I just learned to do no footers in the jump park and I also learned to do the denture on N.E. Style and the last drop on Bone Saw.

What do you do when you aren’t riding bikes?
I like to ski with my sister and friends in the winter. I really like music and I play the piano. I’m also into running, soccer, and playing car racing games on my Xbox.

What goals are you working on this summer? New tricks, going faster, bigger jumps?
I’m learning to do no foot cans but they’re very hard. I know I’m going to get them though.

Do you have any sponsors? If so, who are they? If not, who would you like to be sponsored by?
I don’t have any sponsors but I would really like to be sponsored some day. I would love to get sponsored by any company but when I’m older I want to be a pro and get sponsored by RedBull.

What was your favourite part about making the video?
Riding Cat’s Paw with Malcolm, Nathan, and Kaidan was so awesome! I also liked the train we did on the dirt jumps in Lower Sherwood Forest. We all really had a great time all riding together.

When I take my 3 year old to practice riding on the neighborhood street, after 2 minutes he is on his hands and knees poking at a dead slug with a stick. Focus man! Focus!

What you don't see is the hours that Malcom and Anthony's dads have spent sitting in the highland trainning center or watching them hit the dirt jumps. These dads have put a ton of time in.

What? These kids didn't roost the f*ck out of every corner! Perhaps the old phrase "Skids are for kids" no longer rings true!
I for one welcome these kids to trails around the world. Not only are they all better, and faster than me but they aren't trashing the trails for internet points
  • 4 0
Skids are for 30 year olds who want to feel badass. Glad to know someone's teaching these kids right!
  • 6 2
At 43 I'm still better than these kids. By the time I'm 44, probably not. I'll have to practice my "back in my day" stories to feel relevant. But seriously, I've watched these kids progress over the last 2 years. Amazing is all I can say. The Highland crowd is a really cool place for kids. I see it with my son. Never a complaint about being "too slow" . Hope these kids feel the same way about me when I'm older and "slower".
PS awesome video

^^ The first line sounded harsh but I was just trying to explain just how fast this generation is progressing.

These kids make me feel insecure
  • 2 0
 same here bro! lol
  • 17 1
They went from 19" to 20" wheels because of the perfomance advantages of rolling better etc. etc...
  • 21 5
shame they want to be sponsered by an energy drink
  • 7 1
I agree, although I would prolly slug down a few redbulls if they paid me to travel the world and ride bikes.
  • 17 2
An energy drink that puts money behind our sport? What's the shame in that?
  • 8 9
energy drinks are evil and shouldn't be marketed towards kids.
  • 8 3
They are not evil hahaha. Moderation is the key like with everything.
  • 13 3
Evil? Good grief. Charlie Manson was evil, Hitler was evil...Red Bull is a freaking overpriced caffeinated drink. Nothing more, nothing less.
  • 3 1
energy drinks that finance their projects and cover their medic bills
  • 15 0
I'm pretty sure Anthony's desire to someday ride for Redbull has more to do with him wanting to be like some of the pro's he looks up too and very little to do with the drink itself. Until very recently he thought all they made was cool videos and bike helmets.
  • 4 4
Marketing super sugary caffeinated drinks at kids is a little insidious. The recommended sugar intake (added sugar, not counting naturally occurring sugar in fruit and other produce) for kids is around 130 calories. A small can (250ml) of RB has 108 calories from sugar. Around 80% of their daily sugar intake. These little shredding groms are probably doubling (or more) the energy output of many kids, so for them its not a problem. But advertising and sponsorship works, other kids will buy into the image and charf down 500ml cans of energy drinks to be like the cool kids. The US and NZ are two of the worst in the world with kids obesity rates. When the benefits of selling sugary drinks is privatised (profit) and the cost externalised (healthcare) there's no market signal to do anything but sell more cans of drink to everyone.

Not that I'm against Red Bull at all, I'm just in favour of trying to minimise kids exposure to sugary drinks. This would likely be done by reducing advertising aimed at kids and reducing accessibility. Those mechanisms seemed to work for tobacco.

You mustve watched that video where the jesus freak lady explains how monster is basically satan in a can.....I cant believe how much RedBull spends on oddball events and action sports, they do more for extreme sports than anyone.
  • 13 2
HOLY CRAP! THEY WERE SENDING LIKE 20FT. DROPS! Oh wait, they're 3ft. tall, whoops. It never gets old seeing little kids absolutely shredding. The MTB scene is promising in the US and its very exciting to see where it'll be in 5-10 years. Keep on shredding young uns!!

  • 1 0
Lots of kids on the weekend. Will taper off with colder weather but this past weekend there were tons of kids. My son (5 years) loves it there. As for those kids, ya, see them often.
  • 1 0
Spring and fall are actually busier at Highland than summer....
  • 3 0
Speaking for Anthony and myself, we're typically there at least one day every weekend. Malcolm, Nate, and Kaiden as well. Please come up and introduce yourself if you see us. Always love having new friends to ride with! There is such a positive scene at Highland, especially for the kids. Even when Anthony was just learning we never once experienced anything but positive and enthusiastic support from anyone we've met. I would say we see that even more now and as a dad it makes me proud to watch Anthony do the same thing with the even younger kids or those just starting out. Very different experience than other sports we've been involved in. Can't say enough about it. See you on the hill!
