GUYS ONLY! You have a bike, know where to ride but your buddies aren’t into it. OR, you’re looking to pick up some downhill or freeride skills to keep up with the gang or really push your limits. Well I hope this is the answer you’re looking for:
Freeride Camps and Sessions for guys! in Calgary, Alberta.
GIRLS TOO! The popularity of freeride camps for chicks seems to be soaring right now and with other Alberta camps filling up fast, here is another option: for a fraction of the cost of pro camps, you can join our
half-day and evening camps and get personalized attention. Come out and join a free evening weekday session as well!
First of all, there are four different groups here: 1) Men’s half-day and evening Freeride Camps - $35 - $50
2) Treaded Mondays - Intro Sessions – guys and girls – no cost
3) Women's half-day and evening Freeride Camps - $35 -$50
4) Treaded Tuesdays - Advanced Women's Session - no cost
Men’s half-day and evening Freeride CampsLooking to keep up with your buddies or learn some new skills? Want to really get into mountain biking, whether it be full-on DH or just mellow freeriding? These are the groups for you. These progression sessions start at the beginning and evolve to the more advanced skills. Take an advanced camp and learn how to corner better, descent loose steeps and even try that stunt you've been working up to. Even if you’re a XC racer and you want to learn how to ride ‘down' faster, freeriding skills are extremely helpful as the faster you go down, the further ahead you are for the ‘ups’. The cost is $35 for evening sessions and $50 for half-day sessions.
Skills to tackle throughout the course of the summer:
- Balance. We all have it, we just need to harness it. Practice makes perfect they say and a little time on the low skinnys isn’t a bad place to start.
Zhiish rides the skinny
- Get that down and move up to skinnys off the ground. Yup. Learn to be more conscious of your front wheel, learn what your back wheel is up to and how to get off the skinnys the safe way if you’re not going to make it. We can even bump it up a notch to skinnys with corners if you’re so inclined…
Radek making the corner
- Next come Drops. Learn to drop anything – from curbs to those infamous wooden structures that just end. Learn more than just pulling back on the handlebars. There is actually technique to some of this stuff.

- How about Dirt Jumping? And we won’t start with the 15 foot gap jumps either. First you have to learn the body positioning when simply rolling over them (tabletops), then how to leave the ground, then what to do with all that air-time you have. Dirt Jumps are like anything else – there is a progression and we go through it.

Sean styling off a bigger set
- A million and one other little techniques. How to corner faster without the bike going out from under you. How to stay committed to a stunt/tricky part. How to descend stupid steep sections. How to wheelie to get over things. Weighting and unweighting the front and back of the bike. You get the picture.
This group will be run by Nick Quinn and Karen Murray.
Treaded Mondays - Intro Sessions Every second Monday night this summer (starting May 16th), Canada Olympic Park will play host to a free group ride for newbies to freeriding. This is a MIXED class so beginner ladies AND men are welcome! There is no fee associated with these group sessions and you don’t need a full-suspension bike to participate. Here are the highlights:
- Age 18+ only
- Meet every second Monday night starting May 16th though August 22nd
- Helmet required
- Optional and recommended but not necessary:
o Armor for your arms and legs, gloves, full-face helmet
o Flat pedals
o Season’s pass at COP for $99
o Water via water bottle or CamelBak type water container
This is the intention for the group:
- No pressure to do stunts – ride at your own pace.
- This group is more a social group than an instructional group although we will work on a specific skill together and do at least one complete top-to-bottom run together.
- First stop each night is at the Trials’ Park where we can regain balance, work on smaller stunts or work on a specific skill set.
- Meet some other very cool people with whom you can ride at COP or elsewhere.
This group will be run by Nick Quinn and Karen Murray.
Women's half-day and evening Freeride Camps With several sessions this summer, you can join up with the group that most appeals to you and your ability level. The idea with these camps is progression. We will start at the beginning (so be sure not to miss the first couple of camps!) with introductory skills and as the summer goes on and camps come up, we will move up levels hopefully getting you to your desired skill level by the fall. If you're already biking and feel as though you've hit a plateau, come join the more advanced groups as we learn some more advanced skills. Even if you’re a XC racer and you want to learn how to ride ‘down faster’, freeriding skills are extremely helpful as the faster you go down, the further ahead you are for the ‘ups’. The cost is $35 for evening sessions and $50 for half-day sessions.

Treaded Tuesdays - Women's Only Advanced SessionThis is the same group as last year!
The gang on night #1!
Advanced riders or those comfortable riding COP/Moose only please. If you're not into stunts but are comfortable on the 'downs' then you're welcome to come out. We'll be doing lots of evenings at Moose hopefully too. If you're not sure if you're able to keep up, come out to the Monday night sessions first and qualify yourself there. This is a no-pressure, ladies only group where we learn from each other and work on one particular skill if there is interest. We get off our bikes to spot one another when trying new stunts from time to time, and the emphasis is on riding 'smart' rather than going 'big'. Know your limits as there is no competition here. The only change this year is this group will run bi-weekly (twice a month) rather than once a week like last year. There is no cost to participate other than your lift ticket for the nights we're at COP.
This group will be run by Karen Murray.
About KarenOriginally from the East Coast, I used to race XC at an Elite level, race DH on a hardtail, and was usually the only female Maritimer to jump in Dual Slalom races. My experience and ability, combined with my love for teaching sports (level 1 skiing, rugby, sailing, and level II snowboarding) got me interested in teaching technical courses for guys and girls. As a woman, I also have a compassionate side and am always ready to push or pull-up the reigns when needed. I am currently certified with Level II Theory.
Launching off the rocks
My experience thus far with teaching mtn. biking includes an all-woman freeride group held last summer at COP, once a week. Not only did the girls learn a lot from one another, we also pushed each other to be smart riders too. I pride myself on working at your limits and feel that ‘being certified’ isn’t necessarily as important as being in tune with riders needs, limits, skills and ability. I can teach you the dynamics of every skill out there from balance on skinny’s to dirt jumping to dropping the drops, to simply riding ‘down’.
About NickI'm a Dh Racer, free-rider, Park/street punk and a enjoy some XC for fun. Basically I ride just about every style of riding. At the 2005 Alberta Freeride Awards I won the free-rider of the year, racer of the year and best all-round 18-29.

My coaching background includes coaching lacrosse for 5 years. In addition I also played in the NCAA for 3 years @ Whittier College where I was the Captain of the Team in 2000/2001. I got drafted in the NLL (National Lacrosse League) to the Calgary Roughnecks in 2001' , but ended up not playing professionally due to injuries. Basically sport has been my life since I was 6 years old when I started playing soccer, baseball & hockey.
About CarlyHi! My name is Carly Lyseng and I am excited to work with such a great group. My experience biking began 5 years ago when I started riding with the Edmonton DirtGirls and occasionally did some cross-country racing. I moved to Calgary almost 2 years ago and started up the DirtGirls Calgary chapter (now called the 'Spin Sisters'). I have been involved with women’s only sport for more than 10 years. Synchronized swimming (I have national level coaching certification) and Ultimate Frisbee are my two other activities. And of course, I love riding bikes with other women! See you all on the trails!
