Derek Frankowski photo essay in Mountain Bike

Go to your local magazine rack and pick up a copy of the July / 05 issue of Mountain Bike. Go directly to page 40 after a brief stop to see Shawn Denny (yes, a trials rider) fill up the entire "July" introduction page (page 5).
Once you found yourself on page 40 you'll see the first images from the most recent Drop In - International tour of New Zealand to grace any North American magazine. It seemed like the plane had just landed and we were getting settled back into Canadian life again when Derek Frankowski called me up and said to start watching for a photo essay coming up in Mountain Bike. Needless to say I was impressed to hear the excitement over the New Zealand film trip was already translating into instant magazine coverage but I was sceptical that I would see anything before the end of summer. Usually waiting for a magazine article is a 3-6 month process and sometimes longer. By that time it's not really "news" anymore is it?

Someone over there at Mountain Bike has their priorities straight, and before we can even get a teaser online for everyone to have a sneak peek, they have pounced on the amazing shots taken by Derek "Franko" Frankowski and combined them with his first-hand account of what went down there in the form of a 13 page photo essay. I especially liked the way this story came together because the shots leave so much to the imagination. Mountain Bike purposely picked the "B roll" shots to capture the lifestyle aspect of the tour which is what Drop In's all about, as well as make you beg for more... More there will be.
Franko's been hard at work pimping out the 2000 shots he fired down under to other magazines, placing some of the best in Adidas ads which you will soon see everywhere, and redesigning his new website (which is very cool).
Thanks to Michael Frank at Mountain Bike for having the forsight to bring you all some actual "news" in the bike world even when he had probably never seen the previous series of Drop In (Canada) that has eluded American TV screens to date.
