The Cardiac Classic: the name alone inspires excitement for some, for others, fear… and for good reason; the race is aptly named. The course may seem unassuming, but those who have ridden –or more importantly climbed- the course, know better.
In the past, we have had some complaints that the Cardiac Classic course is too difficult, with climbs that are just too hard. Naturally, we were incredulous, after all, this is a mountain bike race, and it isn’t supposed to be easy. So, for you whiners, for those of you who would rather offer excuses than train, ride and race, we say this: stay at home, stretch out on the couch with your Coors Light and season 5 of Friends, and stop bothering us with your complaints.

Tire-spinning grinders to the top of Burnaby Mountain have been the hallmark of this race since its inception, and we have no intention of changing it now. Last year’s course was so challenging, Evan Guthrie’s face exploded. OK, so it was just a nose-bleed, but he did bleed all over the course, his bike, pretty much ruined his number plate, and yet still managed to place second*.
But once you do finally make it to the top, the payback is the downhill, which is just a whole lot of fun. Sweeping technical descents take you through some of the best single-track in the area. Burnaby Mountain is truly a hidden gem for flowing single-track, so don’t let the fact that it’s in the middle of the city fool you: this is legit riding, and proportionally, this race has a lot more great trail riding than most of the major races around these parts.

Once again, we will be running a free Trail Blaster Kids Race, so bring your kids and chase them around their own mini-cardiac course!
Back again for this year is a complimentary BBQ courtesy M&M Meats open to all racers, and we all know, nothing satisfies like a solid helping of meat and cold bevvies after slogging around a grueling race track!
