VINTAGE BMX RACING EVENTS SUPPORT THE DAVIS PHINNEY FOUNDATION FOR PARKINSONS

Inspired by BMX Hall of Famer John Crews, three national events along with BMX Action Foundation raise $10,000 to support living with Parkinsons.

Fullerton, CA (November 21, 2023) – Vintage BMX racing is the newest, old thing and its growth is supporting a good cause like the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons.

When the Frogtown Classic International BMX Days was first conceived by Co-Founders Todd Huffman and Johnny Valdez in 2019, they had no idea what “good trouble” they had dreamed up and what it would become in a few short years. After the first two years in 2021 and 2022, two additional events were created with Temecula, CA’s Dirtyfest and the Texas Classic BMX Days in Floresville, TX. All three are growing and rowing in the same direction to provide fun and exciting “old school style” BMX racing and bike show experiences for an aging population of racers. And more events are following all over the United States and the world.

Part of this growth is the ability to give back, and the three events have taken on Parkinsons as a cause because of their friend and BMX Hall of Famer John Crews who is living with Parkinsons. Mr. Crews has recently focused his own charitable efforts towards the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons so he asked that part of any fundraising go towards them. For 2023, the events had numerous dinners, silent and live auctions to raise $5,000 which was contributed to and sent from the BMX Action Foundation non-profit that they contribute to. This was matched with another $5,000 from an anonymous donor for a total of $10,000.

“We had no idea when this event was dreamed up that we could support a cause like the Davis Phinney Foundation,” says Frogtown Classic International BMX Days Co-founder Todd Huffman, “It’s a testament to the sport of BMX and its fans that events like Frogtown and the others can thrive to support causes like this”.

“As someone who raced in the ‘Golden Era’ of BMX and is living with Parkinsons”, says BMX Hall of Famer, John Crews, “I am so proud of my BMX brothers and sisters both old and new that support these events and ultimately this great cause”.

The donation also embodies the spirit of the “brotherhood of cycling” and all things pedal-powered. At the end of the day the BMX track is not that far away from the pelotons of the European grand tours that Davis Phinney himself excelled at.

For 2024 the dates for the National Vintage BMX Racing and Bike Show series are:
• April, 12-14 Dirtyfest, Temecula, CA
• May 17-18, Texas BMX Classic, Floresville, TX
• September 6-8, Frogtown Classic International BMX Days, Angels Camp, CA

About the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons:
Since 2004, the Davis Phinney Foundation has brought to life some of the most important programs, research, content, and events for those affected by Parkinson’s. Our community includes people living with Parkinson’s, Parkinson’s care partners, families and friends of those living with Parkinson’s, physicians, and Parkinson’s allied health professionals. About their namesake. Davis Phinney is an Olympic Bronze medalist and Tour de France stage winner who has celebrated the most victories of any cyclist in American history. From the late 1970s until his retirement from professional cycling in 1993, Davis achieved more wins—328 victories in all—than any other U.S. cyclist. In 2000, after years of feeling not quite right, and an almost endless round of tests, Davis was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease (YOPD).

About the BMX Action Foundation:
The BMX Action Foundation was formed with the blessing of the man who created the renowned magazine it was named after, Bob “Oz” Osborn. The non-profit foundation’s mission is to “…carry out BMX Action's long- standing tradition of promoting, preserving, and developing all things BMX. This not-for-profit will be an organization to support and fund that tradition through multi-media, events, other organizations and community activities. Our objective is to create an organization that does not prioritize a specific discipline of BMX, but celebrate all equally.”
