Today it was announced that Richmond, Virginia, won the Bell Built East Coast grant. The project, titled the Richmond Regional Ride Center, received 13,896 votes, over 1500 more than any other winner. RVA will split the $100,000 with Cottage Grove, MN, and Fort Tuthill Flagstaff, AZ. The description of the project form Bell's website:

"This project will seek to rehabilitate 15 miles of existing mountain bike trail and construct an additional 20 miles of trail. The goal is to incorporate approximately 15 miles of stacked-loop singletrack, and an additional 5 miles of flow trail which will focus on a progression of difficulty. The project will also focus on improving the existing trails on-site in order to diversify the trails and improve the overall depth of experience within the system. In addition to these singletrack trails, the project seeks to develop a new gateway trail with two loops suitable for novices, children, handcycles, and bicycles pulling child-trailers."

The current 15 miles have fostered an immense mountain biking community in Richmond and plays host to the XTERRA East Championships annually, which features world-class athletes such as Specialized rider Conrad Stoltz, along with Dominion Riverrock, the biggest action sports festival on the East Coast which was the first stop of the brand new Red Bull Berm Burners, a head-to-head pump track competition on a specially constructed course. This year's festival, which took place this past weekend, also hosted a slopestyle competition featuring Matt Macduff, Adam Hauck, DJ Brandt, Reed Boggs and many others.

This project will bring an amazing use of resources to our city in a way that will foster new love for mountain biking and cycling in general, as well as offer our more seasoned riders fresh trail to shred. We are also hosting the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, which will bring an estimated 450,000 cycling enthusiasts to our city. This is the first time World Champs has been in the US since 1986 when it was hosted in Colorado Springs. On behalf of Richmond, thanks to everyone for voting and making this amazing project a reality!
