Underdogs - Part 2

For those of you who remember, a while ago we had a quick chat with Nick Peterson about his web series and the movie he is working on with two mates... well, here is an interview with another of the men behind the lenses of TriSet, Maurice Santiago.

Interview and videos inside,Ok, if you missed the last one check it here. That's enough from me, let's hear from Maurice himself! I recently caught up with him while he was filming at the Australian National Interschools in February, and here is the result.

What is your name and age, and where do you hail from?
-Maurice Santiago, 15, Wollongong, Australia.

Other than the other members of Triset, you're younger than a lot of the other filmmakers out currently, how long have you been doing it for?
-I’ve been doing it since January of last year.

Cool. Did you get into the video stuff after you "found" mountain biking or were you not riding?
I was riding when I found cinematography. Watching videos from young Sam Tolhurst back in the day somewhat enticed me to go out and do something like that as I’ve always been more artistically inclined rather than sporty.

Do you ride?
-To my friend's house. Other than that, no.

Sweet. Ok, for anyone playing along at home who doesn't know about your movie thing, can you give us a quick run down on name/release date/what it is about? ect?
-It’s entitled UNDERDOGS, working on it with Sam Tolhurst and Nick Peterson. It’s about the young guns in the Australian riding scene that always seem to blitz the competition and feel at home when on the podium. Also, we will throw in some BMX and dirt jump stuff.

Is it kinda like Sam Davies TIA (This is Australia)?
-Incorrect. Sam Davies documented the lives behind the riders in the Australian Elite series, we are more focused on the riding aspect rather than interviews etc.

In terms of film making, what style would you say you have and what filmaker(s) inspire you? And how does this work with the other styles in tri-set?
-I'd say more of a sporting style. I've tried numerous times to do something boarder line dramatic, but I get really bored of it quickly, but I like to incorporate more dramatic angles into my sports filming, like dollies, etc. I think the same goes for both Nick and Sam, but we like to try and create our own style. As for inspirations, Isenseven and Spike Jones.

Any rider names we can get? Or is it all top secret and under wraps?
-Crimmins Brothers, Dave McMillan, Phil Piazza, James Green, Callan Robinson, Ben Power, Ryan Hunt and more...

Will it be an inter-webz release or will it come to us via-DVD?
-We are in talks with sponsors to help us distribute DVDs if we slap a big fat logo on the cover.

Anything happening in the way of sponsorship? If there are any companies looking to help out and how should they contact you?
-We have confirmed Banshee bikes and Dobermann in association with Barspin Imports to help us out as Ben Power and Ryan Hunt ride for them, and Nathan J Ashworth's up and coming clothing and designs brand, ROLLIN.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the video, then drop me a line at: www.vimeo.com/santimmedia

Finally eight random questions about you.

1) If you could ride/film one place in the world, with whoever you wanted, where would it be and with whom?
- London, with an all-star independent cast of Britain’s best actors and actresses filming some sort of drama.

2) Do you have any other interests outside of mountain biking/film making?
- I love art, Contemporary, Abstract, Aerosol, Wheat-pasting. I also enjoy going to concerts and festivals, chilling with mates, playing with fire. (watch out for some KILLER pyro-techniques in UNDERDOGS)

3) Who do you look up to the most, and why?
-Can’t just be one. Mum and Dad for sure. They help me with everything I do, and support me with everything I do no matter what it is.

4) Funniest mountain bike related moment?
-Thredbo Interschools 2010. Whole weekend was a crack up, whether it was disrupting weddings with filthy dubstep on portable speakers, my mates blasting beats at 10pm waking everyone in my apartment up, or every stack on the 4X track. (ed. note: that Dubstep woke me up too... it was good music to be woken up to at 2am, but maybe not the night before race day!)

5) If you were on death row, what would your last meal be?
-Deep pan pizza with a dozen pain killers.

6) If you could have dinner with three people (Dead or Alive) who would they be?
-I’m a very anti-social person to be honest, I like eating alone...

7) What music are you listening to these days?
-Too much. I listen to everything from Jungle, Dubstep and Gabber, to Ska like The Specials, Police and Madness. I also love experimental punk music, kinda like The Smiths, At The Drive In, and The Mars Volta. I also really like my Hardcore like 50 Lions, Parkway Drive and Have Heart.

8 ) Finally, tell us a joke.
(Ed. Maurices' joke was really funny, but not appropriate for all readers. I have put a different one in; 10+ points to the person who knows where it came from.)

Knock Knock;
Who's there?
A blunt pencil.
A blunt pencil who?
Don't worry, it's pointless.
*canned laughter*

Thanks for that mate, any shout outs you want to do?
- Probably everyone on my facebook, or anyone who buys UNDERDOGS.

Fuck off. It took me a year to work and save for both the camera and tripod. I actually stick to one thing to save for and not spend it on new bikes.
