It’s not always possible to ride in the sunlight, winter evenings are short so work and other commitments often get in the way. Night riding is a staple of the dedicated mountain biker, there is nothing better than squashing the day’s troubles into insignificance with a blast around the forest.
Night riding will bring a plethora of fresh challenges to your local trails. It is weird to think that you could ride the same track every day, yet not recognise it at night when only a handful of lumens separate you from complete disorientation. You also notice less, the small halo of light mutes all surrounding distractions so you can focus entirely on every revolution.

Another advantage of night riding is the equality that it gives every rider. There is no posing in the newest gear or showing off new shiny parts, just a few beacons of light roaming through the forest. It gives you some quality time with your fitness, helping you to notice where improvements can be made which is always helpful. I also enjoy the fact that it gives you something to look forward to all day, giving you a motivational boost.
Obviously you will need a decent set of lights to make the most of the evening’s ride. I have an Exposure Maxx-D mk1 and love it. There is a quick release mount that stays on the bike, then the light simply slots on. The battery is built into the fully- waterproof unit which simplifies the design and increases longevity.
Previously i used Electron Terra lights and they were terrible, i managed to break 3 sets in the space of 6 months. I look after my kit so was disappointed to see them fail so often, but my LBS took care of me and replaced them without charge.
I would highly recommend Exposure though, good customer service, well made products made in England. Yes they are a little more expensive than others but you won’t be disappointed.
