Looking for tips/advice before I begin my first DJ line.
My friend has like 10 acres of woods that we have access too. We just finished a pump track, but I'm looking for any pointers before I dive into a full DJ line. Like:
Dirt vs Wood? I have been stockpiling wood up there, but I have very little plywood, which seems to be a crucial part. Also have access to a small tractor, but it isn't very powerful.
If I do go dirt, is there any science to shaping them, or just go until it looks good? I was looking at wood jumps, and the rule of thumb seems to be use a radius that it between 60% and 70% of the height of the lip (9ft radius for 5 ft jump for example). Does this hold true for dirt?
Should I use all dirt, or can I stack logs and cover it with dirt, or would that be too soft?
Cool feature ideas other than jumps?
I'll probably do a mini road trip to a couple of the local DJ spots for inspiration and ideas too.
I prefer dirt over wood any day. There's a bit that goes into shaping a jump for sure. you can do the math or you can feel it out. I like to just build a jump with a shape that looks good depending on how much speed I'll have or how far I need to clear then jump it and feel it out. If it doesn't work I'll reshape it till it does. You can use all dirt or stack logs. Logs work fine as longs as they're good and sturdy before u start putting dirt on them. I thinks berms and rollers between jumps are a blast. Rollers are good for gaining or losing speed too.
Try this thread, me and some friends are building some dj trails this summer and used this info, so helpful! https://www.pinkbike.com/forum/listcomments/?threadid=3110
