I snapped my rear x4 8 speed long cage derailleur. Standard hitting the spokes and chewing it up. Bad setup yes I know.

I've just brought a SRAM x7 8 speed short cage. Now obviously I have a 2 speed front which I understand I won't be able to use. I also understand it would be best to use a close ratio cassette.

I'm a complete noob to this so bear with me.

1) do cassettes have a generic fit on a hub/freewheel?
2) What range/size cassette would you suggest and what front ring size to go with it? I'm incredibly unfit since stopping riding (used to BMX) 3 years ago so low end is a consideration however plan to ride some XC but mainly downhill and jumps
3) Anything else about this I've completely missed?

Thanks for the patience!

Why would you buy 8 speed... It gives you so much less options I believe. Get a road cassette.

Yes they are generic. Just make sure you get either a hub or freewheel. And get a 34 front ring and 12-28 rear cassette.
