Ah, for the valves we have a 10cm strip of rim, with 3 holes drilled into it, displaying American, shraeder and presta valves. I just get them to point to which one it looks like if they're not sure. Amateur road riders just say "the skinny one"

Q "what kind of bike are you looking for?"

A "Oh I dunno, just a normal bike"

Sure, we have a range of many non-unicycle/non-tricycles in our store, thanks for helping me help you....

Customer walks in.

Mechanic puts down wrench and says, "Good morning. How can I help you?"

Customer says, "I'm just looking around"

Mechanic picks up wrench and goes back to work.

Customer immediately says, "I need a part for my bike. I don't know what you call it, but it's the thing behind the doohickie that holds the handlebar..."

Translation: I don't know what I need, but I DO know that I had to interrupt your work twice before sucking you into a game of 20 Questions.

Some day I'm going to waterboard a customer with a dirty shop rag and a quart of Stan's who claims to be "just looking" when they really came in for some specific purpose.

This time of year is especially epic for customer insanity.

...Three times in a row you attach the rear derailleur cable and it's indexed perfect from the get-go.

and then one piece of housing compacts a bit and you spend the next 10 mins fiddling with the barrel adjuster to get it just right Blank Stare

Or, you properly stretch your cables before even adjusting anything with them.

See his original post... It's one thing when you are installing a new rear der only, but when doing new cables how on earth are you supposed to "pre stretch" the cables with out first attaching it to the rear der Blank Stare
