Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society 2010 AGM - March 26

by Moose The Mountain
In 2009 we awoke a giant. In 2010, we’re whipping that giant into shape and pushing it towards its full potential!

Read more to find out how you can get involved with the Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society for the upcoming season, starting with our AGM on March 26!

The giant is Moose Mountain. For over a decade, with over 1800 vertical feet of shredable goodness, Moose has served as a prime riding spot for Calgary and area’s freeriders, downhillers, and cross-country rippers alike. Thanks to the hard work and vision of the area’s core builders and riders, Moose Mountain has been a growing center of awesomeness for many. Much of the mountain’s development had been occurring somewhat under the radar with fingers crossed, but there was just too much potential to keep under wraps and too much at stake to not legitimize the whole deal.

About this time last year, a group of us builders and riders got together to wake this giant; to bring the Moose into the light and revere it for all its glory. We formed the Moose Mountain Bike Trail Society and our mission:

To advocate, develop, and maintain mountain bike trails and to promote healthy, active, fun, and environmentally responsible community involvement.

(Translation: To build, shred, and high-five!)

The response was insane! We have received incredible support from the government, adjacent user groups, and of course – the riding community at large. In short order, we made great strides. Here’s a look at some of our key accomplishments from 2009:

- We gathered 135 stoked MMBTS members (thanks to all of you!)

- We got the green light from Alberta Sustainable Resources Development (SRD) to steward and develop the trails (mission part 1 – check!)

- We held 4 MMBTS trail days (about 1000 hours of volunteer trail love) and the annual two-knee race (mission part 2 – check!)

- We applied for, received, and managed a grant from the National Trail Coalition and the Alberta Government for $70,000 and successfully pumped that money directly into the trails (mission impossible – check!)

That $70,000 was spent between late September and December 2009. The Moose got a makeover of epic proportions before slipping deep into its winter beauty sleep. If you weren’t out for any rips late last fall, you’ll be in for a few nice surprises come spring!

Speaking of spring - the new riding season is approaching! We’re getting ready to unleash the Moose for 2010 and we need your help! To get things rolling, we are holding our first ever Annual General Meeting on March 26 at the Shaganapi Community Hall in Calgary.

We’re going to review all the highlights of 2009, go over our plans and opportunities for an awesome 2010, get as much feedback and input from the community as you can bring us, and then kick back for some laughs and get our stoke on for 2010.

You bring muscle, we bring tools and bevvies.

Then you own it!

MMBTS exists only to serve the trails and ultimately the riders. We want awesome trails and happy shredders. The more involvement, support, and direction you bring to the table – the better our riding experience becomes. Mountain biking has been gaining huge momentum with governments, industry, and the public at large – the iron is hot and we want to keep striking! So come on out, give your trails and riding community some thought, and put it on the table!

If none of that tempts you – then just come for the beer, friends, slide shows, and door prizes!

Details:

Date: Friday, March 26, 2010
Time: 7:00PM
Location: Shaganapi Community Hall, 2516 14 Ave SW (On the corner of 14 Avenue and 24A Street SW)

Door prizes, Beer, Music, 2009 Slide show and Vids to follow!

Damn I wish so bad that in Portugal riders could do that, offering so much of themselves

I'm in a "society" that all sundays call for riders to help in the maintainance* of the trails we ride, it's a mount where, maybe 60 plus riders go and only 10 or 15 work. And every time I can go to help, I always see the same faces! And even the authorities are against us, they closed the trails some time ago, obviously we keep riding and working a bit illegal.

Hope this isseu comes to an end quikly Frown

Anyway, I love to see that you guys are not facing the same problem, I guess.
Props for eachone of you!!

*sorry the bad english ahah

Cumpz!

Wow, like 3 days ago I was wondering what was going on with Moose and if the first trail day had been scheduled yet. For anyone has not ridden this area it is truely amazing. Sick trails with good shuttle access and the MMBTS keeps their trails in great shape. See you guys on the 26th!!!

I can't believe how far Moose Mtn has progressed over the last 8 or 9 years. I remember flagging trees with 3 others to lay the initial framework for "That Wh_re" back in '02. There was some serious bushwhacking involved...hence the name. Since then, countless others have reshaped the trail...and owned it (rightfully so). I'm going to drag my 40+ carcass up there to relive some memorieas and make some new ones.

I really think that what the MMBTS is doing is fantastic. Way to go guys. Just out of curiosity though, where does $70K go into trail development? That's ALOT of lumber, and I'm assuming the money didn't go towards renting heavy-equipment.

it went into hiring a crew to work on the hill. we don't use dimensional lumber, its not to code anymore, we mill up our own peices. The $$'s went to wages, fuel, oil, tools, admin, signs sounds like a lot but when you look at how much work building a trail is, that money goes fast

As Chromag said, close to 80% of the grant went directly into labour costs and thus directly into making our mountain even better. A big thanks to the MMBTS trail crew detachment that toiled sweat in harsh conditions into buff singletrack and superior TTF craftmenship. We had a contingent of up to 8 trail masons(TCDC coinage) working full time growing the flow on Special K, Pneuma, ROS, Toothless, T-Dub, John Guy, SLF and Breakless. Lots of tasty treats for our riders to sample, so ensure you sign up and get involved with MMBTS for 2010!

Wow, that sounds pretty awesome, but what's all this about dimensional lumber not being to code? I thought milling on site was what volunteers did when they had no cash to buy lumber, but free time to mill. Also, where did the timber for milling come from? Don't mind my questions, I'm just really curious and interested in the work you guys are doing out there. Myself, I'd love to get involved, but I live a little too far away. If time permits, I'll see if I can make it out for a trail day this year.

No milling materials means you can make pieces that are larger then a 2x6 which tend to break over time. Making your own material allows for more structual integrity in the features and means they will be there longer for us to enjoy. Buying lumber and hauling it in is very costly, time consuming and labor intensive. Those of us who spend out time building in the area have come to use our skills now that we have the permission to take care of our trails. We love when new people get invovled with helping on the trails, come out to trail days, come out on your own and throw dirt in the corners, it all helps....
