Meet The Gravis Cycles Line

Jul 24, 2015
by Omar Salas
Chile has been appearing in the last years more and more on the international Mountainbike scenery. Valparaiso Cerro Abajo, Andes Pacifico, EWS Nevados de Chillan, lots of promotional videos of renowned brands and endless pictures of epic rides make it look like there is some potential. Now, keeping that in mind, what is really missing …exactly, a good Chilean bike brand. Sure there are some old, local brands, but nothing you can really use on trail or competition. So, this is where our story starts and it´s not so much related to a country rather than to a few people who have made the impossible to get to this point.

The idea was growing even before Eduardo, one of our founders, started to work for almost 4 years in the Research and Development Center of Merida Bikes near Stuttgart, Germany (2011-2014). But let´s start with a big Company. As Industrial Designer he worked mainly on the frame design of MTB´s. To make it short, in these years he designed four mayor frame projects, some used by the Merida Multivan XC Team and one road frame project, being used by ProTour Team Lampre-Merida. He had an awesome experience, a complete industry insight, many travels to the center of the bike earth - Taiwan - and finally lots of confidence to leave Germany and risk together with us the step into our own bike brand ! Our team is completed by Loreto - Graphic Designer - and David - Industrial Designer -, a small but powerful, capable and willing team. Sorry, forgot to say, all are bike freaks since their 12-13 years of age.

During his time in Germany, Eduardo was a witness for many years of Canyon´s, Radon´s and YT Industries - german bike direct sellers - development through magazines, internet, fairs and every design contest or, bike of the year“ they won. So business model was a fast decision we took, particularly considering common pricing strategy of official
distributors and bike shops in Chile.

After almost 3-4 years developing, planning, contacting, meeting and writing thousands of emails, we got our crazy idea synthesized for the start, into 9 bikes - offering Road, XC, All Mountain and Enduro - and our website which was launched about three weeks ago, www.gravis-cycles.com (for now only in Spanish) All this managed parallel to our regular jobs and with an inexistent budget.

What amazes us most is the fact, that until now we hadn´t sold one single bike, have had an extra load of work you wouldn´t imagine, no evident industry background, but got the full trust of all mayor specialists for transmissions, suspensions, wheel sets, tires and whatever component you might imagine, so a lot of thanks to all of you for believe in us.

At this point you might ask, who will be the big investor to allow us our first season. After many, many meetings with chilean investors and knowing from the start that internationally they are very poor rated for their attitude and „vision“, we thought it was a very good practical experience but now let´s try to take this completely in our hands, like we have done it all until know.

We developed the idea to offer our bikes on an Early Bird / Kickstarter model. You choose your bike on our website, you get an excellent early bird“-price, pay your bike 100% until 28th of july and get your GRAVIS model 2016 from the end of december 2015 on. Obviously on a mass production basis you have to comply with minimum orders, so if we can make this minimum requirements (aprox. 400 bikes) we are all super happy and relieved, if not, money is refunded 100% latest on 31st of july 2015.

As former MTB racers we wanted to offer a product which can be used immediately on a high amateur level just on your next competition, our range considering transmission starts with SRAM X9 (2 x 10s) and follows with SRAM GX, SRAM X1 and SRAM X01. On suspension we are working mainly with Marzocchi, Rock Shox and DT Swiss, being our ,owest“ quality fork a Marzocchi 320 LR 29er. Other components are provided by Easton, RaceFace, Selle Italia, Maxxis and others, which have allowed us to assemble bikes with a very good weight if you start to compare. We are proud of not using one single non series component or even making really weird mixtures. We don´t even want to talk about price …

If you have a look on our frames, you will realize that they comply with all the best and actual technical standards, BB92, BB386 Evo, tapered, rear axle X12 x 142, internal cable routing, etc. Their manufacturing quality is very good, all made in Taiwan, with a warranty of 2 years for carbon frames and forks and 3 years for aluminum frames as well as a crash replacement program.

Before you start screaming: "generic frame", yes, they are! With much more then a decade in product development experience, inside as well outside bike industry, inside as well outside Southamerica !, tons of knowledge in production procedures, analysis of technical and economical viability and finally considering that Chile has a population of just 17.600.000 people and a GDP per capita of U$ 23.500, you will understand that it is quite clear and smart to start this way. Nevertheless our aim and desire from the very first start is to develop our own sublime frames and bikes, until we become the next "holy cross".

We are riders, we have the most awesome mountains with every condition you could wish, we have the experience and capabilities, the skills and tools and as industrial designers it is our only wish to create us a basis where we can work with time and some budget on our own frame developments. It is a real joy for us to create, try, build and break, trial and error is a daily need, this complete process and proposal is build on that concept.

We want to invite you to have a look on our bikes and hope to get some feedback from your side.

If you have a question or suggestion, you can contact us at info@gravis-cycles.com, www.facebook.com/graviscycles and follow us on Instagram @graviscycles, we are fluent in Spanish, German and a little bit less in English ; )

We hope to count with your support on this adventure in any way, which involves one of the best human inventions ever made, the bicycle.
