The Inca Avalanche presented by Global Epix was full of surprises. The conditions were described as fun, rowdy, raw and terrifying. Racers were greeted by snow which created Peru's largest slip and slide. In the second open tundra section, it was not a question of if you'd crash, but when, riders were seen accelerating down the slope on their back and heads, using their bars to put themselves right. Alejandro Paz (Santa Cruz/Fox) and Luana Oliveira ( Nukeproof/Oakley/Oneil) established themselves as early favorites, winning their respective qualifiers.

Sunday's final was void of snow but not lacking in carnage. As the course warmed up the mud became increasingly slippery. Luana Oliveira suffered a puncture, leaving the door open for Go-Ride.com riders, Joni Wirts and Christine Dern to take first and second respectively. Alejandro Paz checked out early, holding off 2012 Campeon Yannick Wende and taking the Inca Avalanche poncho for his own.

What an amazing event! the whole week leading up to the race was nothing but awesome and the locals were super supportive of the trailfest and race. I'll definitely be headed back to Ollantaytambo in the future, now lets see that bike check!
