I'm afraid the only bikes I saw are plastic and alu, which makes a lot of sense - they are lighter and stiffer, which probably works great on a quick race like this. I have impression steel is almost exclusive to some older generation and single speed riders, it can also be seen on longer, endurance events as it's good for those who appreciate extra comfort.
This is my 3rd year of racing in the UK at the events organized by the local to me Gorrick. Initially I was starting at various categories just to get the idea on where I belong the best. Last year I did the above series in Sport category which is actually more demanding having riders age between 18-40, and in autumn 2013 I settled with Masters (30-40yo). For me those races are great opportunity for going out and ride MTB, getting familiar with the surrounding woods and chat with guys just like me. Competition, bit of adrenaline and pushing the body limits is icing on the cake
