im kinda new to all this so whats the advantage to say having a 26 in the front and 24 in the rear on a dh bike?

This would never happen if the rider is a racer. (even though it's uncommon) you'll see this setup on riders who do straight hucking, a smaller rear wheel is stronger and less prone to being damaged if a rider cases a jump/drop or over rotates on a whip. Same goes with bmx, they're small wheels but super tough.
