You Don't Need to Learn on a Hardtail - Opinion
I think that it depends on the age you start at. If you're starting in your teens or later when you weigh a but more then yeah, a hardtrail is without a doubt the way to go. As Mattin says, it teaches you to be light on the bike. But for me and many others that started super young (9y/o for me) I was lucky enough to get a duallie for Christmas and spending a few years at 30/40kgs on flat pedals where I kept getting bucked off taught me to find the smoothest way down the hill as I kept getting quicker.

A lot of these trails are really narrow with pretty dense bush on either side. I think Matt's done pretty well to get around this - very well done

In all honestly what we really need is some like the motorcross community has with MXSimulator, a relatively simple (build wise) game that has a massive community behind it. If we can have an open world game that the community could develop both maps, riding kits and bikes it would increase community involvement and reduce the strain on the developers to continually keep up with new bikes and kits coming out every year. I think that a good MTB game on console/PC is a huge untapped market that could have great success

Red Bull Rampage 2013: Cam Zink's Prototype Hyper
Not sure if its already been mentioned, but the front chain ring has every second tooth widened meaning that there is less movement whilst the chain is on the ring basically meaning that there is no need for a chain guide to provide tension or guide the chain on the ring.
