Confirmed: Cannondale's New Downhill Bike Has 2 Shocks
It's certainly not a new idea. I wrote about doing this ages ago when I worked in the bike industry as a design engineer- Riley&Scott did it on their WSC racecars around 25yrs ago and MotoCzysz did it on their C1 racebike (a friend of mine worked there.) The big advantage was you could have a linear/progressive spring but a completely different (even regressive) damping curve. A while after MotoCzysz did it on their bike Ohlins and Penske figured out how to build a regressive damper and made it kind of moot in the motorsports world.

The Short, Turbulent Life of URT Suspension
@RichardCunningham: And the Rock Shox LTD that Trevor Lee Harris designed. That was an interesting design. Tomac was fast on it but he was pretty darn fast on every bike he rode. The Rock Shox DEVO team rode them (not many were built) and I remember John Kemp telling me they were awesome for climbing but not so great for descending and they were somewhat fragile as well as it was a difficult design to build light.

@deeeight: I'm a bit late to the party but thanks for mentioning this. I rode the Titanium Giz bag bike that Roo Trimble and Mike Augspurger built back at Mt. Snow in '93 (I think it was then as I was working at Onza at the time.) The Gizbag rode surprisingly well- better than many bikes at the time. Scot Nicol let me ride an early production Szazbo and I hated it. Then Dave Turner showed up at the Onza office with the first Burner and it pretty much put everything else to shame.

This design is most definitely a URT. It's very similar in principle to the RockShox LTD URT that Trevor Harris designed. The biggest problem with active URTs that have an effective pivot near the BB is that they tend to need a fair bit of compression damping in order to be efficient pedalers. If you build a URT that is more active forward weight transfer during pedaling has a tendency to compress the suspension. Most poor performing URT that people remember were the opposite of this as they were built long before we had platform valving.

As much as it needs to in order to not self destruct. It's a one off goofy bike- doesn't matter what it weighs as it's unlikely anyone else will ever ride it.

Well that makes some of my crazy ideas seem almost normal. Kudos to him for building a Ribi- I honestly didn't think it could be done.
