Track side fans were everywhere. The track here is short, so loads of people were swarming the hot spots. A spectator at the bottom of the course could pretty much track the progress of riders by the blaring horns and cheers of the crowd long before riders came into view.

On track for a good run was how Jill Kintner was looking when she ripped by me. Alas, after the road gap and the step down, Jill blew out of a turn and rag-dolled hard. Broken arm is the main injury, according to reports, with surgery in the am. Hopefully she can recover in time to make it to World Champs in early September.

Coming into form would be the best description of Tracy Hannah's ride. South Africa showed the promise she has; but it's hard to contend with riders that have been on a regular training and racing schedule for years while you've been working a regular job. But her run was quick. Very quick: only +.262 seconds off Rachel's time. Yeah, Rachel damn near threw it all away, but that's racing.

Young Austin Warren, kid brother to "C-Dub" (aka Cody Warren), was absolutely on a tear when he ripped past me. He took a hard, aggressive corner here and was clearly faster on this line than any other racer I come through at full tilt. The upper section saw him looking at a top 20 time, but somewhere down in the lower woods he threw that away, ending up 40th on the day.

Trackside DJ with an American flair: Metallica, Guns and Roses, Def Leppard... you get the idea. If it had throat singing or angry, aggresssive lyrics, it was blaring at levels to make one's eyes bleed if you got to close. Awesome!

Richie Rude wasn't stoked with the way he picked up the leading junior's jersey in Mt St Anne: by default. Loic Bruni skipped Mt St Anne to study for and take his college entrance exams. Test time over, Bruni was back on track here in Windham, and while Rude turned in a stellar time ( +4.476 seconds off pace, but solidly in fifteenth), he turned out to merely be keeping the jersey warm for Bruni, who turned in a time good enough for the box (+3.357, fifth place).

Minnaar struggled here in Windham. Short tracks like this are so damn hard because there's not really anywhere to hide. If you make a mistake, it will cost you. Minnaar didn't make many, but he made enough to be off the podium. One can bet that he'll be back on track at Val d'Isere in a few week; Minnaar doesn't take losing well.

Post race means doping control for up to four racers from each field: Winner, Overall series leader, and two randoms. Doping's not something most people think of when it comes to downhilling--unless it's getting banned for trace amounts of THC ala GaryHouseman at Grouse Mountain nearly a decade ago. But the UCI is strict about trying to scrub clean the image of pro cycling. And surprisingly transparent.
