Top 5 DH World Cup and World Champs Runs

Apr 10, 2015 at 11:43
by Peak Leaders
To celebrate the start of the UCI DH World Cup in Loudres this weekend, we at Peak Leaders have had a think about our favourite World Cup and World Champ runs. These didn't necessarily have to be the fastest of the day, but were what we thought were the best demonstration of bike control, speed and style of all the races we have seen so far. Here is our top five:

5. Troy Brosnan - DH World Cup Fort William, Scotland

Troy Brosnan coming off the hip into the last stretch of his first World Cup win to date. Lot s of pressure on the young Australian today and you ll be seeing a lot more of Troy on a podium near you.

Having secured top 10's in the first two World Cups at Pietermaritzburg and Cairns, Fort William was Troy's first senior World Cup win. A significant milestone in any racer's career, and even more so given the fact no rider has secured their first win there whilst it has been a World Cup round. Last man down the hill, Brosnan put in a stellar run to beat fellow compatriot Sam Hill and Danny Hart who had both put together very impressive runs. Not only did he have the edge on the balls to the wall top technical section, but also managed to put the power down in the final sprint. This set Troy up for his next three races, securing podiums in all three before a disappointing 20th in Meribel. Topping off the season with a 3rd place in the World Champs, we are eager to see how his off season has prepared him for this season.

4. Steve Peat - 2009 World Champs Mount Stromlo, Australia

Probably one of the flatter venues used for a DH World Cup, Mt Stromlo was where Peaty was finally able to add that all important World Champs jersey to his almost unrivalled World Cup medal collection. Keeping this low and pinned through the jumps and pedalling hard to the finish, Peaty was in first with Gee Atherton still to come down. However, crossing the line 2 seconds back handing Peaty the win. It makes our top five as one of the defining moment of Peatys careers (So far). Unfortunately an injury to his knee means Steve won't be around for the first few races, but we hope to see him back and kicking come the end of the season and for 2016.

3. Sam Hill - 2008 World Champs Val Di Sol, Italy

An infamous run from Flat Pedal Thuder himself, Sam Hill. This display of extreme riding skill and confidence almost has to be seen to be believed. Unimaginably technical, Hill was able to make one of the hardest World Cup tracks look easy hitting steep and technical sections at unbelievable speed. Despite eventually washing out and crashing mere meters before the finish line, Hill still finished 3rd.

2. Neko Mulally - 2014 World Champs Hafjell, Norway

No chain from the top of the track and riding like a man possessed Neko Mullally managed to finish 4rth today. Just 1.5secoff out of the medals and just 2 sec away from the win. What could have been.

Losing your chain on the first big booter of your finals run would usually make most riders give up, but not Neko Mulally. Having been written off in the commentary booth by Warner an Page, Mulally crossed the line in first and held on to the hot seat for an astonishingly long time, eventually finishing 4th. To finish only 2 seconds off first place with no chain shows an unreal ability to carry speed and will go down in World Champs history. With a new bike for 2015, will Mulally be able to replicate the same pace he shows in Norway?

1. Danny Hart - 2011 World Champs Champery, Switzerland

Unreal. The kid s been knocking on the door all season long and on the one day he needed to shine he blazed 11.699 seconds faster than anyone else

On one of the steepest tracks, in the rain, Danny Hart cemented his name in World Cup legend when he gave a first class display of riding in the wet. Making it look like it was dry apart from a few slides into corners, he had time to lay down a dirty whip before the finishing line, to finish 11 seconds up on Damien Spagnolo leaving Rob Warner and Nigel Page to go Hysterical in the commentary booth. Two podiums in 2014 showed Danny still has that raw pace to take him to the top and it will be interesting to see how he does this year on a new team and bike.

With practice for Sundays race in full swing, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top for the first race of the season. Whatever the result, with the venues that the UCI has got set up for this year, we know it should be a stellar season!
