The toughest course on the Phat Wednesday series and new faces to the podium. Race 7 of the Phat Wednesday series presented by Kokanee was a week for tradition. As the last race before Crankworx returns to its home turf of Whistler, beer league followed convention preparing the locals for the big league. The course Joyride to Canadian Open, the most difficult race for the series and as expected results in the lowest participation numbers. Mont Sainte Anne World Cup this weekend also put a dent in the results with several of the usual podium suspects headed East already.
The Open Male category had some fresh faces this week and new comers to the podium. Christ Kovarik took the win over 10 seconds clear of his next rival with a time of 2:09.96. Vincent Pasquier (2:20.87) finished second in his first Phat Wednesday race and Sean Faulds (2:24.05) managed to secure his first podium with a third place.
Claire Buchar put in a strong race that would have had her top 20 in the open men.The Female Open category definitely suffered with the challenging course with the usual numbers of over 30 racers dropping down to only 11. Claire Buchar walked away with the win, putting 30 seconds in to her closest rival. Her time of 2:32.76 would have been a solid performance against the open male. Both second, Keren Wareham and third, Kat McGill put in a solid race to take their first podiums for the season.
The podium for Master Male had the closest competition of the evening. Showing that these old guys still have what it takes the podium was unchanged from last week. Steve Storey (2:22.16) took the top spot, Shane Gayton was 2 seconds back with a time of 2:24.46 and Adam Dagg (2:28.480) rounded out the podium again in third.
Chad Hendren is on a beer league winning streak. Chad Hendren made his second guest appearance for the Phat Wednesday series and continued his top form taking the win in the Veteran Male category by over 15 seconds. Dave Stratton came in second (3:01.982) and Brett Gossman in third (3:08.984).
Louis Maddford putting his Nomad to the test on the Canadian Open Course.For the Groms Ethan Shandro was the stand out on the tough course. Shandro’s time of 2:30.26 gave him a 9 second lead over second place Seth Sherlock (2:39.94) in the Male Grom (13 and Under) category. Jacob Jewett (2:46.04) had finished up in third place, his second podium for the season.
Jackson Goldstone was one of eight Groms 13 and under to tackle the course.Harry Head (2:41.21) had his first win for the series in the Junior Male category. Lucas Cruz (2:42.45) lost his successful winning streak finishing up in second place but he still has a strong hold on the series. Ben Wallace rounded out the podium with a time of 2:45.40.
