The finale of the 2015 Phat Wednesday Series presented by Kokanee was wrapped up in tradition. The tradition of racing A Line, chainless of course and costumes were mandatory. Well maybe not mandatory but those without a costume were frowned upon for taking racing too serious. This is beer league after all and it's presented by Kokanee so you know the après is guaranteed to be a good evening with mates at the GLC.
Probably the most awkward costume of the nightThe après shenanigans, the racing, the rivalry, the great times with mates just riding bikes is what Whistler Mountain Bike Park is known for. It's the community spirit that blows us away. Back in 2012, the A Line Chainless race was transformed into the F@&K Cancer Chainless race as a fundraiser for the BC Children's Hospital cancer ward. It was started because of a fellow racer who in part owes his life to the BC Children's Hospital. Now in its 4th year, the Whistler mountain bike bums and our many sponsors all band together to donate money, with over $2,400 raised at this years event.
The fundraiser apres beginsA lone cowboy in the woodsChris "The Karver" Kovarik continued his domination of the series taking the win and the series in the open male category. Sean Faulds came in second with Remy Metailler taking third place and second overall for the series.
No chains here, just a mountain scooter. Audric Lacour rode this weapon to 26th place in open male.In the female category, with Claire Buchar away at World Champs the field was left open for the taking. Leonie Picton, certainly snatched the opportunity taking the win by over 20 seconds despite several injuries secured in practice. The win for Picton secured her second spot for the series with Buchar taking the overall. Caz Rands had her best race result of the season finishing up in third spot.
Explorer 200, may not seem practical but it was a rainy evening in the bike park. For the masters male the battle for the top spot continued with the 5th person to take the top spot on the podium this season. It's definitely been the most competitive category of the series and this week it was Mathieu Hebert who had his first win for the season, which landed him in third spot for the series title. Shane Gayton managed to take the overall title for the season despite finishing the race with his worst race result of the season.
A Hawaiian, a fat suit man and a Spiderman rode into a Phat Wednesday race? Who won? No idea but I'm sure they had fun.Chad Hendren wrapped up his season with a 4 from 4 race wins in the Veteran category. Brett Gossman finished up in second but secured the overall series, while Ray Edwards taking third place in the series.
May not look like a costume but the t-shirt says it all, the true spirit of this race. Some of the junior competitors getting in the costume spirit despite the chilly weather.Bailey Goldstone secured the race win and the series for the Junior Female. While in the Grom category Ethan Shandro was back for his second race and second win of the season, proving he may have gained some of his dads bike skills. Seth Sherlock may have been slowed down by costumes in this race but he took the overall win for the Groms.

My mom works in the BC Children's Hospital Oncology ward that this race supports, I think she has one of the hardest and most rewarding jobs out there. Imagine the projects you stay at work late for being a seriously ill child. Try not taking work home with you.
I can remember several years ago hearing that a local racer was in treatment, and was pretty proud to think my mom was part of the team caring for him.

As a side note, she's just left on vacation to Italy to go cycling and hiking... and I'm super jealous.
