Hey all,

I am looking to buy a bike from my local bike shop on the cycle to work scheme. I am aloud 1000 max and my LBS specalize in GT bikes. They are able to get other brands in but not sure for deffient which. I was just woundering what xc hardtail bikes you would recomend for around 1000 pounds. I am after an xc hardtail that i am able to ride hard and fast because i am not the smootest of riders and would like to do some downhilling in the peak districts while out and about.

I was looking at the GT Zaskar comp and that seems good to me. Any other recomendations you have are more than welcome Big Grin !!

So hopefully i will get a big list of good bikes i can ask if they can get in stock.

I have been looking at the long travel xc bikes like the one marin do and they look very nice but not sure what they are like at general xc duties because i bet they are alot better on the DH. Anybody own one that they paid around 1000 for? What they like at xcing and are the better than normal xc bikes?

I ride 4x and race bmx at the min so its my first good xc bike tbh,

Thanks alot jonny

Yeah looks good mate. I am after a bike that i can use for xc and not really use it for riding to work so looking at spending all the 1000 on a good xc bike what is the best value for money.

The cube LTD Pro 2011 looks very good for 899 could do with some slx cranks though.

Any ideas people? Need some help plzzzzz

I picked this up few months ago on the cycle 2 work
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_512535_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

Its a halfords exclusive GT. I know they're a Sh*t store but its good value. review here:
http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/mountain/product/id5-i-drive-xcr-09-34201

Not quite what your looking for it's an all mountain can be slow up hill but great bike for the money. oh and the Halfords boardmans are good value XC bikes.
I know Halfords service and repairs suck but if you get your bike in a box they're great value.

If you really want an XC hardtail try this: https://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2055 most of the Canyon's are reasonable, don't forget to check the outlet section for discounts.

I think i am going to change the bike shop i get it from to a bigger shop that stock alot more brands.

So now i am able to get orange, scott, cube and giant bikes.

The Cube is a very XC race set up probably limited to 100mm forks. Great bike and spec. but you'll suffer on the DH
sections, on the other hand with the long stem, lightweight and short travel forks you're in a perfect position to motor up hill.

The Orange sound more like what you want spec. is on par with the cube but 140mm travel and shorter stem should be more fun DH. But climbing will be harder.

Maybe try find something with a RS Sektor or a fox TALAS fork, travel adjusts from 100 to140/150 on the fly which means (in theory) XC angles up hill and slacker trail/all mountain angles DH.

After a few weeks of commuting in the winter I'm convinced that a single speed is the way to go. Even fixie has real benefits on ice and snow. Simple, light, not much to steal, then go racks and full wrap around fenders wide enough for the tires. Depending on your commuting rubber, a 45 or 60 mm wide fender is a must. I think I went 60.

After few weeks of commuting in snow i think gears are real option. I think fixie is real option if you want to commit suicide by riding under a car.

(I've never had any problems with my derailleurs in winter and i sometimes ride hub-deep in snow)

I am also considering taking advantage of the R2W Scheme. I fully intend on spending the full £1000. Wondering what I can get for my money. Looking for fully suspended. Might as well get a decent XC/AM hack for the new year!! Currently looking at what Evans have to offer, not too sure where else to look.

Always been happy with the Specialized's I've owned, but I do like the look of that Norco!

Or this Commencal if I spend a little extra of my own money.

Or realllllly push the boat out and go for the 2011 Pitch?

There's a lot more options if I spend a bit more money, including LaPierre's and such... really need some advice as this is my first fully sus XC/AM bike - currently got an old Rockhopper!

i would personally say go for the commy or the pitch bit more do everything bikes, even thoought the norco does lok pretty nice.

I have decided to just upgrade my dialled holeshot instead of doing cycle scheme. Just brought some pike 409's gettin mavic 521 on pro 2, new stem, seatpost and seat and new brakes. then i be happy Smile hopefully i be able to use it for xc with longseat post and still race 4x aswell Big Grin

Surely there's a way to use the scheme to get a bike that has said components, transfer them across, get them all for cheap, and then sell the other bike afterwards?

Oh re-he-he-heeeallly? Hmm. Well I emailed Evans earlier and he didn't say that there was a type of bike I couldn't get, (not including kid's bikes). I guess I'll wait for my manager to reply to give me a budget!
