hello all!

i've had this issue for longer/harder rides (mountain and road) that my lower back will start to really hurt during the ride. i've had my fit checked multiple times, and tried multiple spacer positions and stem lengths but still it'll hurt.

what would y'all say i should try to do to remedy this? it really sucks when its the only inhibitor to me going on long rides or racing..

I've had back problems for over 50 yrs, at almost 70, I've found that sitting a bit taller, i.e adding a stack under the bars, and using bars with more rise, has helped me. I have a twisted and curved spine, I also have arthritis in my lower back. Oh, and I switched to a shorter stem which is now a 40 mm stem. You might try this to see if you can at least ride longer with out as much pain. Good luck, hope you find a way to have fun again.

I used to have lower back problems on and off the bike. I started doing deadlifts and it solved it for me. Issue was bad postural chain and deadlifts is the king of strengthening that.

Do you have any known back issues?
Do you do anything physical other than riding?

Since you've had a fit, I'm going to assume your seat is the correct height...?

Are you maybe slouching, as opposed to hinging at the hips?

Bikram yoga to tone the core. It'll change your life.

One thing I forgot to say is, if you haven't done so already, is find why your having back pain. There could be a number of reasons why it hurts, and once pin pointed maybe a simple exercise to help correct it. I would highly recommend seeing a back specialist.. I think you will be better off in the long run doing so..Wink

I have had problems with lower back pain when I started riding a couple years ago. Went to a specialist and it all had to do with my hips being extremely tight, which a majority of people don't stretch as often as they should. I would jump on Youtube and look up Yoga with Adriene she has a great videos for hips and lower back. Once I started doing yoga everyday my pain went away, I was a lot more flexible and my overall energy levels and mood went up.

1upping this. I don't do yoga (although I should) but I started stretching a lot and my back pain went away. If I start getting lazy on stretching I can feel my lower back starting to tighten up again.

Yes Yoga or any form of stretching can help you with your back problems.

I do kyokushin karate next to my mountain biking, the stretching we do there helps me massively.

When my back is acting up I need to stretch right before I hop on the bike, ride harder than normal for the first mile (mtb) and than stop and stretch again. I do a couple yoga poses and a stretch routine every morning and every night. Now I just go to the chiropractor once a year or so, at my worst it was 2x a week! Also make sure you're drinking enough water on a daily basis.

My lower back hurts when I ride too. I found it was my hamstrings. If i give them a good stretch right before, or shortly into my ride, it is a big improvement. I try to stretch them regularly at home too.

I'm a physical therapist that works primarily on bikers.

I would say to check your core strength and to add in more exercises. Also pay attention to what muscles fatigue the most when riding.

As someone mentioned earlier... hamstring length and more importantly the ability to do deadlifts are key.

I'm 56yr old, I can surely relate to that. I tried the "Teeter Inversion" device about 5yrs ago and on the first try I heard my back pop so loud and sudden rush of relief just from hanging upside down. There are weeks I was forced to lay down, not anymore since I got a "Teeter". Sounds like an add but true, check it on line, they have 4 easy payment plan if you live in the USA.
