After cleaning up the Queen's solar car office, we stumbled upon some carbon rotors. This gave me an idea to actually make some better ones and test them out for bikes since we have a lot of carbon lying around.

Have a weight by any chance?

i think i read somewhere that the carbon particles can cause cancer

Don't have a weight on these ones but I will be making ones more suited for the bike, also make them more stylish.

Carbon nanotube does cause cancer. Mostly in the manufacturing process, but the dust is not good to inhale either.

How are you cutting these? Laser cutter?

I think with a good design and a reasonable weight they would rock, and carbon fiber doesn't bend like steel.

Would carbon heat up from the brake pads? Would you need special brake pads?

If I can get my hands on a laser cutter than yes. These ones were apparently cut on a band-saw.

The carbon would not heat up from braking with bikes. Not enough power, not sure about pads but that's why I'm going to test it out.

I've been waiting for this. I know they've been useing carbon/kevlar brakes on Suberbike and Moto GP bikes for a few years now and I've been waiting for someone to start adapting them for bike use. It's a promising system that could yeild way more power and better durability than current disk brakes with less weight.

Standard resin, or what sort of coating would you put on?

Posted: Aug 20, 2008 at 18:53 Quote
The carbon is prepreg, so it has the resin already in it.

i dont see why it wouldnt work, although the carbon might wear down? on many road bikes with carbon fiber wheels after about 1000km the wheels at the pads sites seem to have worn down

I'd be worried that if you hit it a bit, and got a fray, you'd need to replace them, as the fray would soon destroy them.

You could always sand it off.
